NHL Board of Governors meeting to approve sale of Coyotes to Utah
Wednesday night marked the final game of the Arizona Coyotes' and possibly a final season in Arizona amid rumors of an NHL franchise moving to Salt Lake City.
Amid reports of the blockbuster move, ahead of the game against the Edmonton Oilers, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed there will be a meeting of the Board of Governors at 3pm ET on Thursday, April 18 to approved the sale of the Coyotes to Utah.
Earlier on Wednesday, reported soon-to-be owner Ryan Smith shared that while the NHL hasn't officially confirmed the move, it's basically fine.
“There are no secrets,” Smith said, speaking at a sports business conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday. “Not everything online is true but in this case it is.”
Smith, who also owns the NBA's Utah Jazz, is reportedly buying the team from the NHL for $1.2 billion.
“I have great faith in the people of Utah,” Smith said. “We showed up. It will be packed. I'm excited about it and showing it. There is a lot of work to be done from the practice facility to everything else but we will get it done.”
Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo and general manager Bill Armstrong have not commented publicly on the move or sale.
