Not ready to use electricity?
I remember working the second shift at a market research data center back in the ’80s. Since I was never home at night — and VCR programming was impossible — I was completely miss TV blockbusters Congratulations and LA Law. At the time, I felt left out of all the chatter regarding those much discussed shows, but in the end it didn’t really matter much — even though I still heard good things. beautiful about Susan Dey’s portrayal of District Attorney Grace Van Owen.
And, it doesn’t matter much if you spend money on an EV as your next car, or even the one after it. Here’s why:
While some car brands have announced timelines — usually a specific model year — for going all-electric with their respective models, most consider those goals soft. and consumer demand will eventually drive the transition from selling gas-powered cars to electric vehicles.
However, some of these timelines seem very aggressive. For example:
- Jaguar, by 2025
- Alfa Romeo, in 2027
- Buick, by 2030
- Bentley, by 2030
- Cadillac, by 2030
- Volkswagen, by 2035
- Honda, until 2040
- Hyundai, until 2040
Additionally, Nissan intends to sell an all-new EV line-up in the US “sometime in the Thirties”.
Look at the list above and note that — save Volkswagen — the non-luxury displacement brands are planning to completely transform their lineups no sooner than 18 years from now. So you can rest assured.
For premium brands, they prefer a group of customers who have the means to pay for an electric vehicle and home that has (or can be equipped with) level 2 home charging. Although this number may be That’s likely to change rapidly as more affordable electric cars hit the market, but currently about 80% of electric vehicle owners have never used a public charging station.
And while we’re hearing a lot about electric cars right now, it will be a long time before even half of the cars on the road in the US are electric. Consider this: The average passenger vehicle in operation today is 12 years old. So if every car sold from today onwards is electric, it will be almost a decade before the majority of the national fleet is electric. This means that demand and accessibility for gasoline will remain strong for a long time.

All that said, EVs are pretty cool. Most electric cars are fast, quiet, efficient, and will eventually cost less to own over time. Concerns about battery life seem unfounded. While the internet is littered with anecdotal stories of complete battery drains, remember, by federal law, hybrid and EV batteries are warranted for at least 8 years/100,000 miles. And in California, that warranty coverage is 10 years/150,000 miles. (Kudo to Toyota for providing California-level coverage in all 50 states.)
So if you plan on using electricity, by all means, just wait. To be honest, public charging infrastructure is not where it should be, and setting up home charging can be difficult and expensive. Alternatively, it might suit your need to wait a few years and experiment with a used EV, perhaps as a second car.
Also, through the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act, the federal government just extended the EV credits through 2032, so there’s no rush to get the incentive. And, because the new EV incentive laws are so complex, it may take a while for most vehicles to qualify.
Although I don’t know much about Norm, his cheese doodles, or the rest of Congratulations crew, I’m not too shared about it. But this is the information age, and you can read as much or as little as you want about electric cars. You also don’t have to buy early.
