NS News: Students collect books for the school library
Molly Knight, a fourth grader in Nova Scotia, noticed her school library didn't have many books about female athletes, so she started her own book campaign in hopes of changing that. .
“I want more people to see women playing sports, because people need women to play sports so they can motivate themselves and watch other people play sports,” said Molly in an interview with CTV's Mike Lamb. different game”. “So they feel really excited about doing something new.”
Molly said she's looking for books with lots of pictures.
“I want some people to give away books with lots of pictures of girls playing basketball because then other people will say 'oh that's great, maybe one day I'll be like them.’”
Molly's mother Lucy said she would like to see more books for young readers that focus on women in sport.
“I think girls getting into sport are really motivated, there has been a lot of attention recently with PWHL and March Madness in the US. I think more girls are playing more sports than ever before and that's not really reflected in the books that are out there.” for young readers,” she said.
She added: “I think it would be great if we could have more so that girls can not only look at boys and men as inspirational people to become like in the world of sport but you can also start to see yourself on those pages.” .
“The school librarian said she was on board and she was really excited,” Molly said.
“We're really proud of her, she's very determined and she likes to speak up about things she thinks are important and this is what she thinks is important and she likes to get things done and make it happen. reality. So she will do that and we fully support that,” Lucy said.
Donations have begun to flow in for the book drive.
“We have had a number of people contact us and have books available for us to pick up or plan to donate. So that's great,” Lucy said.
Molly said she was grateful to everyone who donated.
