New Delhi:
On New Year’s Eve, Delhi saw a huge increase in the number of coronavirus infections with 1,796 new infections – an increase of 36% compared to yesterday’s number of cases (1,313). The nationwide increase in cases is attributed to Omicron.

Here are the top 10 points in this big story:

  1. Today’s increase in the city was the largest daily increase in seven months. On Thursday, Health Minister Satyendar Jain said the new variant is slowly spreading in the community and it was found in 54% of the latest samples analyzed in Delhi.

  2. The disturbing detail comes as the government of Arvind Kejriwal tries to ensure strict curbs across the national capital, including a ban on New Year’s gatherings and events. In addition, schools and cinemas have been closed again among other curbs under a “yellow alert”. The positive rate is 2.44%.

  3. In his New Year’s message, the Minister said: “Covid-19 cases are increasing again in Delhi. Your governments are taking all necessary steps to limit the spread. Personally, I’m taking care of the preparations and taking great care of everyone. .

  4. Earlier this week, the Delhi Health Minister linked the recent increase in cases to international flights. “The cases increased due to international flights. Even in the previous wave, cases increased with incoming flights. There are a lot of people who are testing negative at the airport and they are allowed to go home. After returning home, they tested again and the result was positive. In the process, they are also infecting their family members,” he told reporters.

  5. Until last week, the city had registered about 100-200 cases in a day. This week, however, it has seen an alarming rise over the past few days. Yesterday, daily cases passed the 1,000 mark in seven months.

  6. Mumbai also recorded a spike to 5,428 cases, 47% higher than yesterday.

  7. India has recorded more than 1,200 Omicron cases so far.

  8. Today, the central government told the states that anyone with a fever, headache, sore throat, shortness of breath, body aches, loss of taste, fatigue and diarrhea should be considered a suspected case of Covid. and must be tested.

  9. The curbs will likely be strengthened if major cities continue to see an increase in cases.

  10. In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan said: “The increase will happen very quickly and many people will get sick.”
