O’s refuses to renew Camden Yards, joins governor in pushing for stadium renovation

The Baltimore British Yellowbird and Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced a joint commitment to what they call a “decade-long public-private partnership” to revitalize the Camden Yards sports complex.

A statement from the team and the new governor of the state came Wednesday, the deadline for the Orioles to make a one-time, five-year extension to their lease at Camden Yards. According to multiple reports, the team has no plans to implement that option. Orioles’ rental decision was first reported by The Baltimore Sun.

If not renewed, the lease will expire later this year, but the team and the Maryland Stadium Authority can continue to negotiate. Wednesday’s joint release appeared to be an attempt to defuse any tension in Baltimore about the team’s future.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Governor Moore, his administration, and the Maryland Stadium Authority to provide Baltimore with a modern, sustainable, and electrifying sports and entertainment destination.” that the state of Maryland deserves,” said Orioles CEO John Angelos.

“We greatly appreciate Governor Moore’s vision and commitment as we seize the enormous opportunity to redefine the paradigm of what a Major League Baseball venue stands for and thereby restore I hope and expect that, together with Governor Moore and the new members and new chairperson of the MSA board, we can once again realize the full potential of Camden Yards to serve as a catalyst for a second Baltimore renaissance.”

Republican Larry Hogan, the state’s predecessor, last year signed a bill to strengthen the bond authorization for M&T Bank Stadium, the home of the state. Baltimore Crows, and Camden Yards. This measure allows loans of up to $600 million per stadium.

“When Camden Yards opened 30 years ago, the Baltimore Orioles revolutionized baseball and set the standard for the fan experience,” Moore, a Democrat, said Wednesday. . “We share the Orioles organization’s commitment to ensuring that the team plays in a world-class facility at Camden Yards for decades to come and are excited to advance our public-private partnership.” I.”

Angelos recently reaffirmed that Orioles will stay in Baltimore, though he turned down a reporter who asked for more clarification on the team’s future ownership situation. Angelos was sued last year by his brother Lou, who alleges that John Angelos gained control of Orioles at his expense.
