Over 1,000 songs with human-mimicking AI vocals have been released by Tencent Music in China. One of them has 100m streams.

MBW’s Stat Of The Week is a series in which we highlight a single data point that deserves the attention of the global music industry. Stats for the week powered by Music group Cinqa technology-based record label, distribution and rights management company.

The use of artificial intelligence-generated music has just accelerated.

We’re not talking about the AI in the instrument alone manufacturingbut the use of machine learning to actually mimic and even regenerative human voice – making the need for a real singer obsolete.

MBW first explored this topic last March, in which we analysis The lasting meaning of HYBE’s investment on (and next repurchase) Artificial intelligence company based in Korea supersonic – claims that their AI technology can produce “surreal and expressive voices” [not] distinguishable from real people.

Now, in China, things have reached the next level: Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) says it created and released more than 1,000 tracks contains vocals created by AI technology that mimics human voices.

And get this: one of these tracks has surpassed 100 million streams.

In the three months to the end of September, TME deployed what it calls “patented speech synthesis technology”, Lingyin engine. TME says the technology can “quickly and vividly reproduce singers’ voices to create original songs of any style and language”.

Part of TME’s initial work using Lingyin engine involved the development of “synthetic voices in memory of legendary artists” such as the late Teresa Tengand late Anita Mui.

(‘Reviving’ the voice of a dead star is what HYBE’s Supertone has achieved a lot of media attention for last year: The company used its own technology to recreate the voice of Korean folk superstar Kim Kwang-seok.)

Cussion Pang, Executive Chairman of TME, explained to analysts earlier today (November 15) that TME used the Lingyin Engine to “pay tribute” to Anita Mui by “generating AI code based on AI” she. [voice]” for a new track – May you be treated kindly by this world [English transation] – released in support of New Sunshine Charity Fund in China.

“[This track] became the first song by an AI singer to be streamed over 100 million times on the internet.”

Teresa Teng’s voice was recreated by TME/the Lingyin Engine to lead the track Unsent Mail [English translation]was released earlier this year to commemorate the death anniversary of the Taiwanese star.

TME also confirmed today (November 15) that – in addition to “honoring” the voices of deceased artists through the Lingyin Engine – they have also created “a lineup of AI singers with amazing voices.” singing trend. [i.e currently active] stars like Yang Chaoyue, among others”.

As mentioned, at the end of September, TME said they have created and released more than 1,000 songs with human-style vocals produced by Lingyin Engine.

One of those songs has set the standard for popularity: TME’s Cussion Pang confirmed this morning to analysts that a version of a song, apparently called Today (English translation), “became the first song by an AI singer to be streamed more than 100 million times on the internet”.

Where could all of this go next?

For one thing, the mind will inevitably wander to the fact that more than 100,000 won the song currently being uploaded to major music streaming services globally every day.

How far could that number expand if infinite tracks were now spawned with strange human-like AI vocals?

It’s also worth remembering what Choi Hee-doo, COO of Supertone — South Korea’s AI voice generation platform — said last year when pondering how the technology could evolve.

“For example, BTS is really busy these days and it would be a shame if they couldn’t participate in the content due to lack of time,” the executive told CNN.

“So if BTS uses our technology when creating games, audiobooks or dubbing cartoons… they don’t necessarily need to record audio. [that audio live] face to face.”

Interestingly, the biggest organic revenue driver for K-pop company HYBE in Q3 2022 was the ‘Indirect Participation’ business for the artist, according to which name and portrait of superstar artists like BTS are used in other fields such as games and advertising do not have requires the active participation of the band.

HYBE has now doubled its AI-generated voice plan, by completely have been Supertone in October in a $32 million deal.

Indeed, when HYBE confirmed that BTS would enlist in the army last month, HYBE CEO Jiwon Park, breaking HYBE’s strategy without top earning, said that the newly acquired AI voice startup of the company will “act as an important part of the technology sector we aim to create.”

He added: “HYBE plans to reveal new content and services to our fans by combining our content creation capabilities with AI-based voice and vocal synthesis technology. by Supertone.”

In addition to HYBE and TME, there are again The giants of the tech and music worlds seem to be betting big on AI: TikTok and its parent company ByteDance.

Back in July 2019, ByteDance buying Jukedeck, a UK-based AI Music startup specializing in create royalty free music for user-generated online videos.

In May, ByteDance Launching Mawf, a machine learning-based music creation application that analyzes incoming audio signals and then “re-renders” those signals using what it calls machine learning models of the instrument. ByteDance also recently launched a music creation app in China called ‘Sponge Band’ according to technology planet.

This year, as first reported by MBW, the company has doubled down on its ambitions to create AI-powered music through a recruitment for AI music professionals.

TikTok specifically (and now) recruit for a Scientist working on speech synthesis in California. TikTok says the person will “lead research to advance science and technology in Natural Language Processing and Speech Processing (e.g., Speech Synthesis, ASR)”.

They will also “research, model, design, develop, and evaluate new machine learning models and algorithms.”

It is also recruiting for a Speech & Sound ScientistIn Seattle, Singapore and mountain direction.

TikTok says the focus of this team is “advanced research and development in areas such as voice and audio, music processing, natural language understanding, and multimodal deep learning.”

Maybe TikTok – runs its own artist distribution service SoundOn, and supposedly prepare to expand its Resso music service to more markets – releasing tracks in the near future (like Tencent Music) that are either created entirely by AI or have ‘AI synthetic voices’?

If so, what does it mean for its relationship with the music industry?
