Penn National will cut 16 days from the 2023 race schedule (from 150 to 134), Parx Racing will add four days (from 150 to 154), while the Presque Isle Downs will remain at 100 days, according to the overall calendar already established. approved on November 1, 29 by the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission (PHRC).
“The reduction of days at Penn National is based on mutual agreement between riders and racecourses, in an attempt to maintain the current purse structure,” PHRC spokesman Anthony Salerno wrote in an email to TDN.
Penn National in 2022 was approved for 150 days nearly year-round, spanning three days of the week for more than 50 weeks, with a week-long break in April and September. But in 2023, Penn National scheduled “dark” periods during the first week of January, fortnight in April, the last week of September, and for three weeks in October, according to the calendar provided by the PHRC.
The Parx interceptor looks almost identical to the 2022 model. The three-day race weeks will span more than 50 weeks, with two weeks off in August and five Saturdays and Sundays added to the mix. In 2022, when Parx added weekends, Wednesdays were often cut from the schedule. But for 2023, that will be four-day race weeks.
The Presque Isle will start the season a week early in 2023, on May 1. But the first three weeks of the year will be reduced from a four-day week to three weeks before the Presque Isle closes the season with a four-week race. and five days before closing on October 19.
