Peugeot Inception EV concept model launched at CES

While it may seem a bit strange for Peugeot to reveal its new concept car in the US since it hasn’t sold cars there in more than three decades, it does previously said CES is “the world’s largest trade show dedicated to new technologies and innovations”.

This Inception concept previews the design and technology that Peugeot’s electric vehicles (EVs) will receive from 2025 onwards.

The Peugeot Inception concept is powered by a dual-motor four-wheel drive setup produces a total system output of 500kW power. This is more than double that of the most powerful Peugeot model sold locally.

It is claimed to be able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3.0 seconds.

Only one 100kWh batteries with the concept of required range 800kmaccording to undisclosed efficiency test standards.

Peugeot claims the Inception concept has an average energy consumption of 12.5 kWh per 100 km, slightly better than current standards. Tesla Model 3.

The concept has an 800V electrical architecture that could allow it to achieve a range of up to 30km after one minute of charging. It can also be charged by induction.

The Peugeot Inception concept is built on a variant of Stellantis’ STLA Large architecture, which is “BEV-by-design”.

Externally, the concept looks like an angular grand tourer fastback, with dimensions of 5000mm Long, 2100mm wide and 1340mm High.

It’s styled in the brand’s new “future cat” design language, with the body finished in a smooth metallic pigment. From some angles, it looks like a high-performance hydrogen fuel cell hybrid Hyundai N Vision74 laboratory rolling.

At the front there are features including animated LED headlights, illuminated badges as well as a charging port.

Around the side there’s a so-called “technology bar,” which is basically a screen that mounts on the door and displays information like the current charge level. It also displays welcome and goodbye messages.

Features 20-inch wheels designed in a similar fashion to 408 ‘SUV convertible’. They forged fabric and aluminum inserts, as well as the illuminated Lion emblems in the center.

At the rear, there’s a sharp cutout with signature taillights that illuminate the company’s three claws.

Passengers in the Inception concept are surrounded by a multitude of Narima glazed roofs, windscreens and side windows that offer “unsurpassed thermal qualities and benefits from the multi-chromium treatment”.

This type of glass was originally used by NASA for astronauts’ helmets and is known for the different colored reflections it emits.

Inside the Inception concept, Peugeot’s new generation i-Cockpit system replaces the traditional dashboard.

This new i-Cockpit system revolves around the so-called ‘Hypersquare’ control system, which is essentially a reimagined wire-operated steering wheel.

There’s a tablet-style screen in the center of the Hypersquare steering wheel that shows information like air conditioning, radio volume and advanced driver assistance systems.

There are also four circular cutouts in the corners of the Hypersquare steering wheel that allow the driver to grip properly. Inside these cutouts are sensors that allow you to interact with the content.

In front of the Hypersquare steering wheel is a circular digital instrument cluster called the ‘Halo Cluster’. It can display content to both the driver and the people outside the vehicle.

The Peugeot Inception concept is designed for Level 4 autonomous driving, which, when active, retracts the Hypersquare steering wheel and reveals a large panoramic screen from the floor.

Peugeot aims to introduce this new generation of i-Cockpit system in a next-generation vehicle before the end of the decade.

The rest of the interior of the Inception concept includes armchair-like seats with air cushions and some storage space. There’s also a Focal premium sound system with an amplifier, several sound bars, and two subwoofers.

The seats and floor are upholstered with a special velvet made of recycled polyester with a metallic sheen.

As previously reported, Peugeot has announced plans going all-electric in Europe by 2030.

Linda Jackson, CEO of the Peugeot brand, says auto news in December 2021, “by 2030 in Europe, all of our models will be electric”.

Unlike some other brands, such as Volvo and Bentley, which are aiming to sell only electric vehicles (EVs) globally by 2030, Peugeot is not cutting off the internal combustion engine entirely.

“I still have to make sure internal combustion services are maintained for my international clients,” Jackson notes.

Peugeot has a strong presence in Africa and Latin America, and both regions are transitioning to electric vehicles at a much slower rate than Europe, North America and China.

It’s unclear how Australia fits into Peugeot’s electric vehicle transition. All vehicles sold by the Down Under brand are now sourced from factories in Europe.

Peugeot Australia has not hidden its intention to to deliver up to three all-electric models by 2023started with commercial vehicles, then gradually moved to passenger car and SUV segment.

Peugeot Citroen Australia CEO Kate Gillis will not reveal which models in the global portfolio will fit into each of these three positions, although commercial vehicles will be electronic partner, electronics expertor electronic boxer valve.

Peugeot also produces a passenger version of the Expert van called the Traveler, in addition to offering an all-electric e-Traveller variant.

Meanwhile, the passenger and SUV slots will likely be filled by e-208 EV city bloom as well e-2008 small cross. Peugeot Australia is also considering bringing in the recently revealed version e-308 Down.
