Sources said today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the Indian Air Force to assist in evacuating citizens from war-torn Ukraine.
“Leveraging the capabilities of our Air Force will ensure that more people can be evacuated in less time. It will also help deliver humanitarian aid more effectively,” the sources said. told NDTV.
The Indian Air Force is expected to deploy several C-17s as part of Operation Ganga from today.
Earlier today, a flight carrying 182 Indians landed in Mumbai. The flight was out of the Romanian capital Bucharest, because Ukraine had closed its airspace.
At least two other evacuation flights will bring the Indians back today – one from Bucharest and the other from the Hungarian capital, Budapest.
Prime Minister Modi also spoke to his counterparts in Romania and the Slovak Republic, neighboring countries of Ukraine, where India is planning to evacuate its citizens, about evacuation efforts from their countries. .
On Monday, the government said that of the estimated 20,000 Indian nationals present in Ukraine, about 8,000 have left the country since the first consultation earlier this month.
