PM’s Twitter handles brief deal, share crypto scam link
New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal Twitter account was “shortly compromised”, his office posted on the social media site early Sunday morning, after it shared a phishing link promises a bitcoin giveaway.
“PM @narendramodi’s Twitter handling was compromised very quickly. The matter was moved to Twitter and the account was secured immediately. In the short time that the account was compromised, any Tweets were posted. sharing must be ignored,” PMO India tweeted.
The account has now been reinstated and the malicious tweets have been removed.

According to screenshots shared on Twitter by some users, the tweets came from PM Modi’s @narendramodi account, “India has officially accepted bitcoin as legal tender. The government has officially accepted bitcoin as legal tender. method to buy 500 BTC and distribute them to all residents of the country.” Along with the tweet, a possible phishing link is also attached.
This tweet was soon deleted but not before #Hacked started trending in India.
Users flooded the small blog with screenshots of the now-deleted tweet.

Political activist Tehseen Poonawalla also took to Twitter and said, “Has the Hon’ble temple Twitter account PM #NarendraModi ji hacked? And the promise of #Bitcoin!!”

Another Twitter user wrote, “#PMmodi #modi #hacked account, please don’t click the link. It’s a scam. … Even PM’s account is not safe. Media How safe will Indian social media be from hackers, manipulators, scammers and foreign influence? #Twitter verified security compromised?
Previously, in September 2020, the Twitter account linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal website and mobile application was hacked by an unknown group.
