On September 16, President Joe Biden met Cherelle Grinerwife of Brittney Grinerbecause the WNBA star is still being held in Russia.
In a statement to E! News, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre shared that the two met in the Oval Office, where President Biden reiterated his “commitment to continue working through all available avenues to get Griner home safely.”
That same day, Biden also met privately with Elizabeth Whelansister of Paul Whelananother American has been detained in Russia since 2018 and is serving a 16-year prison sentence.
“The President appreciates the opportunity to learn more about Brittney and Paul from the ones who love them the mostand admitted that every minute they were detained was a minute too long,” the statement read. We all admire the courage of the Whelan and Griner families in the face of these unimaginable circumstances, and we remain committed to reuniting them with loved ones. “
