Prohibit participation in political street performances, protests last until February 11
New Delhi:
Days before upcoming council elections in five states, the Election Commission today expanded Street runs are prohibited, Pad-yatras, rallies and processions of bicycles/bikes/vehicles until Feb. 11 vote.
Now, up to 1,000 people will be allowed to attend public meetings of political parties or run for candidates in designated open spaces with a maximum number of 1,000 people. Before that, the limit was 500.
The commission has also increased the limit for door-to-door campaigns. Instead of 10 people, now 20 people, not including security personnel, will be allowed to participate in door-to-door operations.
The EC met with election and health officials from the five voting states to review the current situation of Covid 19 infections and expected trends.
“All the secretaries of state have informed the Commission of reports of Covid 19 infections either persisting or decreasing by the day. They also said that the positive rate is decreasing with the number of hospitalizations also increasing. trending downward,” a statement from the EC said, adding that state officials suggested continuing Covid precautions.
The electoral authority has allowed indoor meetings to be relaxed. Allow up to 500 people (up from 300 currently) or 50% of the hall’s capacity.
Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said that while considering easing, the practicality of carrying out orders by field-level authorities should be ensured in light of the prevailing situation.
