failurea vampire shooter launching this week on Xbox and PC, developed by Arkane Studios, the same team behind classics like dishonest And prey. It’s one of Microsoft’s first-party exclusives for 2023, a major release for the company’s Game Pass subscription service. And by most accounts, it sucks.
We’re currently playing the game together for our own impressions, which should be published soon, but in the meantime—because I find the reception to be phenomenal for its size (and price). both) of the release—I thought I’d compile some of the impressions and reviews available from the stores that managed to get the code first downfall of liberate, release, free (we, obviously, didn’t) or updating a portion of the assessment in progress as they continue.
Let’s start with GameSpotwho rated the game and gave it a 4/10:
In the end, Redfall is a game that should not have been released. Its series of bugs impedes the game loop from exploring its world with friends, and the loop itself feels compromised by elements that are poorly executed and unsuitable for the team that made them. I can’t pretend to know whether Arkane selected to make a loot shooter or deliver to make a loot shooter, but I can tell you how it feels: one of the best game studios in the world suddenly went bankrupt.
GamesRadar gave the game 2.5 stars beyond 5:
Redfall ended up falling short of Arkane’s usual standards. It feels rushed, unfinished, and unsatisfying to play. Singleplayer is plagued by an open-world team-based shooter structure, multiplayer is plagued by quirky decisions, and decent gunplay is marred by an unattractive mission structure. It’s a confusing game, full of contradictions and unsatisfying results.

With Redfall arriving on IGN just a few days before its official release date, we haven’t had enough time to complete our final review – it’s certainly impossible not to be a nocturnal monster and stay up all night. week. However, after several sessions – solo, partnered with a friend, and also in groups of three – I must admit that I was completely overwhelmed by the simple quests and lifeless world of Redfall, and very disappointed with the long list of display issues and errors.
Redfall is unappealing on almost every level, not only in its uninteresting story but also in its all-too-familiar gameplay. Not only does Redfall look like a game stuck in the past, but even its performance is disappointing.
Eurogamer’s First impressions are actually quite optimisticwriter Christian Donlan wants to reserve the final verdict until the game is complete, but I think his anecdote at the end here is a pretty good summary of the game’s visuals:
So how bad is it? I think it’s the technical stuff, and while I leave that to Digital Foundry, I would say the edges – the technical term – are a bit rough. The textures sometimes appear late or not at all, so those beautiful trees always come to life when too close, and at one point the narrative graffiti simulates classic role-playing. strangely pixelated on the wall. The character models are still strangely illuminated. I should add here, I’m trying to be objective, this is always a mistake. I think the patchy texture – yes, I’m really about to say this – gives the town a slightly dramatic feel. The wax figures are wonderful wax figures, the kind you might encounter on your trip through the haunted President’s Hall. Even so, there was no denying the fact that my wife entered the room while I was playing, looked at the screen in horror, and said, “My God! What happened to Fortnite?”
Should I take note? all the rating and display sections are very reduced! If you go to Metacritic, you’ll find several stores — many of which I’ve never actually heard of, but still — that have given the game a positive score, alike We’ve covered thiswho rated it 4.5 stars out of 5speak:
With rich, beautiful open worlds, tons of weapons and countless enemies to fight, Redfall amazes. Players will not regret betting on Arkane’s latest masterpiece.

Performance issues aside, this game sucks. The AI is pathetic, even on the highest difficulty. The controls are clunky. Graphics are average. The world is empty. I don’t understand why these companies think they can start charging $70 for unfinished garbage. I can’t even stand an hour of this game.

I’ve heard great things from Arkane, but not like this. I played with two friends, who also refunded. Try and play it out tonight on a $10 PC Game Pass instead. But that first hour was clear to me: this is not a $70 AAA release.
I’ll end with that last game because, having played it most of the day yesterday, it’s literally the closest experience to my own game. This plays like a remake of the PS3 shooter. It was an unfinished idea, a touted project that somehow went to retail.
It’s hard to explain how raw the whole thing feels without playing it yourself. Even the fonts look like placeholders. Arkane is the studio responsible for some of the most important first-person games of the past decade; to see their names attached to this just… really frustrates me.
