Revealing the world’s 50 best restaurants in 2023
Peru’s capital city – and certainly its culinary capital – put on a great show on Tuesday at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, taking the No. place in the top 50 more than any other city.
Four restaurants in Lima make the list of the 50 best restaurants: Central at number 1, Maido at number 6, Kjolle at number 28 and Mayta at number 47 — Kjolle entered the top 50 this year.
Central, led by Virgilio Martinez and Pía Léon, has been delivering delicious meals with Peruvian ingredients and techniques for 15 years. The restaurant “takes diners through 15 different ecosystems of Peru, categorized by altitude – from 15 meters below the Pacific Ocean to 4,200 meters above the Andes,” the 50 Best website says. Kjolle is Léon’s solo project.
Central is the first South American restaurant to win the “World’s Best” title.
The awards – an event billed as the Oscars of global gastronomy – were announced Tuesday night from the City of Arts and Sciences, a collection of futuristic spaces designed by ants. famous architect Santiago Calatrava, in the city of Valencia, southern Spain.
The rest of the LIST ONLY
The host country performed very well at this year’s awards with six entries from Spain in the top 50, including the world No. 2 restaurant Disfrutar in Barcelona. Spain also took 3rd and 4th place with Diverxo in Madrid and Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo in the Basque Country.
Italy and France also perform well in Europe, with five restaurants in Italy and four in France making the top 50. In the UK, London takes an impressive three places.
In Asia, the notable city is Bangkok, where two restaurants appeared on the list for the first time, both making the top 20: Le Du at 15th and Gaggan Anand at 17th.
Hailing from the United States, two New York restaurants made the top 50. Atomix moved up to 8th place from last year’s 33rd, winning the award for Highest Climber as well as Best Restaurant in the North. America. Longtime favorite Le Bernardin, led by chef Éric Ripert, also broke into the top 50 at 44th place.
This year’s Top 50 includes restaurants from 24 territories on 5 continents, with 12 restaurants making the list for the first time.
Restaurants are only allowed to win the top prize of the award once, after which they will be entered into a separate “Best of Best” program. Members of that elite group include Geranium and Noma in Copenhagen, as well as New York’s Eleven Madison Park, The Fat Duck near London, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, and Mirazur in Menton, France. Central moves to Best of the Best next year.
