The GWM Haval H6 GT is eye-catching and now the value equation is better than ever.

CLOCK: Paul's video review of the MY23 H6 GT Ultra AWD

In a world where price increases are the norm, GWM has implemented this decision by immediately reducing prices. Haval H6 GT Ultra 2024 – $1,500 haircut to find more buyers, with a new price of $44,990 drive away.

Officially, the price adjustment only lasts until June 30, but who knows if it could last longer than that.

Sure, costing a little less makes it a little more attractive and it now has smarter-looking front and rear badging. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement in terms of the driving experience.

What's inside the GWM Haval H6 GT?

A special and sporty seat? Well, the GT meets those requirements and it's also a bit high-tech.

The Ultra trim gets a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia system than the base trim, along with a fully digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster. So you'll feel like this is a big improvement over the old Captiva or Foreigner.

However, the usability of the communication system is not as simple as some other means. In most other cars, there's a button to turn on the seat heating, but the GWM requires you to wade through several menus, which is tedious.

Indeed, many of the controls you'll want to use are done via the display, including adjusting fan speed for the air conditioning or turning air circulation on/off.

There's a series of buttons below the screen for some climate controls, but it's not as user-friendly as it could be.

Front storage is user-friendly, with a pair of cupholders between the seats, door pockets with bottle holders, a small glove box, a wireless phone charging tray, a covered center storage compartment and The large storage tray under the center console – that's where you can use it. Look for two USB ports for charging/media.

That means you still don't get wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Front seat space and comfort are mostly good, the front seats are electrically adjustable quite well, but there are no backrests and I found the seatbacks a bit uncomfortable.

Rear seat space is good, enough room for adults to sit in the back of large cars. At 182cm/6’0”, I had no problems getting behind my driving position, with good knee room, legroom, shoulder room and headroom.

This is surprising for an SUV coupe, but that's because the roof sweeps down from behind the rear door, not from the B-pillar. The cushy seats are nice, too.

There are two ISOFIX points and three top tie points in the second row.

The rear driver also gets a navigation air vent, a pair of USB ports, door bottle holders, a fold-down armrest with cupholders, and a map pocket on the seatback.

The inside is spacious but the trunk is a bit tight. The GT model has it 392 liters Cargo capacity, about 208 liters (or 53%) smaller than the H6 SUV model.

But unless you have three kids, a full-sized stroller, and you plan to travel every two weeks, you should still bring what you need.

Nice to see a space-saving spare wheel under the boot floor.

What's under the bonnet?

H6 GT models come with 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine manufacture 150kW capacity (6000-6300 rpm) and 320Nm torque (1500-4000 rpm).

Those outputs seem a bit conservative, however, as the bike weighs around 1570-1680kg and feels more forgiving than that – especially in Race mode. Yes, it has Race mode.

The transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, with front-wheel drive for the Lux and all-wheel drive for the Ultra. Towing capacity is 750kg unbraked and 2000kg braked.

The 2WD model has an official combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 7.5L/100km, while the AWD model claims 8.4L/100km.

After a few days of normal driving in the AWD model, I saw fuel consumption readings of 9.4L/100km in urban, highway and highway driving. I must have used Race mode less this time because I had previously achieved 10.0L/100km in the same test.

It can swallow 91 RON of regular unleaded, but as any mechanic will tell you, run it on premium unleaded (95 RON or more) and you'll notice the difference. Fuel tank capacity is 61L for FWD and 60L for AWD.

How does the GWM Haval H6 GT drive?

I didn't like it last time I drove it, but what about this time? Well… I still don't like it.

That's not really surprising, as nothing about the driving experience has changed compared to the last model I tested.

Look, if you're upgrading from a 10- or 15-year-old car, you might not find much to complain about.

But I've come to this thanks to my experience driving every car in this segment, and to be honest, the H6 GT isn't even in the top 10 for driving enjoyment or daily driver friendliness. .

It's not weak. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine is adequate for everyday driving and in normal driving mode it provides adequate mid-range torque.

However, the dual-clutch automatic transmission can feel laggy in stop-start traffic, and that's often when it's most annoying – because in addition to the lag, there's also a delay in shifting gears from the selector dial dial, this sometimes seems to decide that it does not happen. 'don't want to go to 'Drive' or 'Reverse'. For example when parking, it can be really annoying!

Additionally, the delivery can be inconsistent in terms of responsiveness and logic, making it feel a bit like guesswork when it really shouldn't.

As I mentioned in my previous review, there's a Racing Driving mode if you want to get the most out of it. It notably sharpens the engine and transmission's response, while also giving you a pop and crackle exhaust soundtrack.

While it made me smile once or twice while driving, other elements of this SUV failed to produce the same emotional response.

For example, the steering doesn't have the consistency or feel of some rivals. It's not as direct as in one Honda CR-Vand not as natural as Volkswagen Tiguan. It can feel oddly heavy at times, which you can get used to, but the turning circle is also large – 12.0 metres.

However, the parking camera system is excellent, making it easier to get in and out of tight spots thanks to sharp images with rear, front, side and top views. down, as well as an augmented reality view so you can position it in the right spot. its environment.

But then again, that system could interrupt your podcast or phone call or navigation instructions because it automatically activates at low speeds.

On the plus side, the H6 GT's ride comfort is quite good considering it has 19-inch wheels, with commendable grip from the Michelin tyres, but it's a bit lean in the corners.

It also doesn't feel as constrained as many rivals when you're connecting corners on an interesting road.

CarExpert reviews the GWM Haval H6 GT

The GWM Haval H6 GT still feels like it needs a proper overhaul to be considered one of the best SUVs in its class, but even I can't deny that it's an SUV worth the money.

If driving dynamics and transmission weaknesses aren't something that's keeping you up at night, it could be a very good choice for you.

Suffice it to say, I won't buy one. But I can understand why people do it.
