Rosario’s quest to rewrite records is likely over

Joel Rosario broke a rib in an oil spill Thursday at the Aqueduct. The news was first reported by Daily Racing Form Dave Grening.
Rosario’s agent, Ron Anderson, predicts that his driver will be off in about three weeks and could be ready for the December 26 opening day card in Santa Anita.
“I haven’t talked to the doctor yet, so we’re just waiting to find out,” he said. “It won’t be two or three weeks before he can ride again, so we’ll have to bite the bullet. Opening day at Santa Anita is 23 days away. Maybe he can do it, but I don’t know.”
With Rosario already completing a number of records, the jockey and his agent have planned a busy schedule for the last four weeks of the year. Rosario has won 49 assortment bets this year, six times less than the record set by Jerry Bailey in 2003, and his 69 wins for the year have seen him win within seven wins. Wins the record set by Garrett Gomez in 2007. With an income of $32,944,478 this year, he is also within a staggering distance of the record set by Irad Ortiz Jr. Ortiz holds. It looks like Rosario is out of time when it comes to setting any new records.
“I’m just worried about him being comfortable,” Anderson said. “He’s not the type to just rely on things like (record breaking). We’ll just work on it and maybe we’ll do it next year. We will continue.”

“Last night on the way home he called me and said it hurt when he was breathing,” Anderson said. “I got off the phone thinking it must be a rib or something like that bothering him. He had an X-ray and it showed he had a broken bone.”
