Via Matt Lieberman: Shawn Porter was NOT a happy camper after his bout with WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford was abruptly stopped by good-natured coach Kenny Porter in the tenth inning after he was hit. knocked down twice by the undefeated champion.
Kenny’s decision to stop the fight resulted in him being booed as fans felt that Porter was fine and could move on.
Porter (31-4-1, 17 KOs) wanted to keep the fight going, and to be sure, he looked good by the time his father/coach Kenny pulled him out of the fight after his second knockdown. his at the hands of the undefeated Crawford (38-0.29 KO).
Porter fought hard tonight in front of a huge crowd at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. You don’t want to see games stopped as early as tonight, but that’s what happens when you have a member of your coroner’s family as coach.
Interestingly, Crawford looked angry after the fight, perhaps because ESPN interviewed Porter who was hit first, not him.
Shawn Porter: “No, he’s doing what he knows he needs to do. I didn’t expect that. We never had a conversation about that.
“We always understood that if he saw what he needed to see, he would do what he did. I didn’t expect that. Yes,” said Porter when asked if he felt he could carry on.
“The punches he took on me were so clean, and I think that’s what my dad saw. I’ve seen it, I’ve felt it, and I just think my timing has been a little off.
“The good boxer there won’t let me keep up with my rhythm. That’s my game plan, don’t let him catch. He’s an energetic guy in and out of the ring, congratulations.
“I know you’ll ask who is the best I’ve ever been in the ring. Without a doubt, that man hit me more than anyone I’ve ever been in the ring. He was on point A to Z.
“The opponent in me wouldn’t let me stop looking at him and wanted to fight him again and he was so good that I wanted to do it again. Congratulations, Bud.
“He’s got it, and I’ve said it in numerous interviews in and out of the ring,” Porter said.
Kenny Porter: “Honestly, his preparation. He didn’t prepare like I wanted him to,” Kenny said when asked WHY he stopped the fight in the tenth round. “So that leads me to say, I don’t want him in that situation.
“He fought a great fighter and he was super responsive. He is [Porter] in deficit. It’s like fighting this guy blindfolded when you’re in such shortfall, so I won’t let that happen to him.
“When people get to certain levels, they believe they know what they’re doing and they don’t have to absorb all the information. This is where we are with it, and I have to make a decision.
“It was an easy decision for me. He lived across from me, and I would have breakfast with him in the morning.
“Definitely what he did,” Kenny said when told that Andre Ward said he stopped the fight not because of what happened to him but because of what could have happened.
“Shawn is injured and moving forward, this guy [Crawford] is a sharp fighter and my child is lacking in that point. He can’t defend himself like he should and I have to protect him.
“For one thing, I can’t but all things combined, he can do all the things that need to be done. Porter said.
