Purebred G1 winner Falmouth S. of the Keswick Family Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}) has retired and will be taken over by Dubawi (Ire) this season.
Trained by Richard Hannon, as well as her Classics award-winning dam Sky Lantern (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}), Snow Lantern is second in her solo start in second place. With Hannon making no secret of how much he considers a slut, Snow Lantern won its seasonal debut at Newbury last April, earning ‘Rising star TDN’ status. After placing third as most favorite in the Michael Seely S. Memorial in York, Snow Lantern came in second behind Alcohol Free (Ire) (No, never) during the G1 S. Coronation at Royal Ascot before taking her Group 1 in Falmouth past G1 1000 Guineas, winner Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), Alcohol Free and Lady Bowthorpe ( GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). Snow Lantern came in third behind Alcohol Free and winner of G1 2000 Guineas and G1 St James’s Palace S. Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in the G1 Sussex S. and fourth in ParisLongchamp’s G1 Prix du Moulin, and was disappointing for the last time at the G1 Sun Chariot S. in October.
The resulting Snow Lantern foal will be bred in the opposite direction of Frankel on the Dubawi cross produced three bet winners from 29 named ponies, including last year’s G1 Derby winner Adayar (GB) and Godolphin’s G1 scorer Jebel Hatta Dream Castle (GB) .
“We feel that Snow Lantern has done its job,” said Keswicks consultant Ed Sackville. She is a Group 1 winner and we know that Dubawi will not be young anymore and we would love to send her to Dubawi. It’s a no-brainer because the Derby winner is by Frankel out of a Dubawi mare. Physically, she would be a good fit for Dubawi; she is a mare of many sizes and ranges. “
Sky Lantern was selected by Sackville for Keswicks for 75,000 euros from Goffs Orby in 2011. She won G1 Moyglare Stud S. in second and G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Coronation S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. in the third position. The first three ponies of Sky Lantern were the winners, headed by Snow Lantern. Her 3-year-old pony First Emperor (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) has no degree but is training with Donnacha O’Brien, while her 2-year-old King (GB) colt who sold to Oliver St Lawrence on behalf of a Bahraini client for 625,000gns at Tattersalls October Book 1 is with John and Thady Gosden. Sky Lantern has a longing pony Kingcurrently in ponies heading to Frankel and will visit Snow Lantern males again this season.
Sackville says Keswicks is focused on quality in the construction of their commercial operation.
“The Keswick family has studied the business models of commercially successful rivets and is looking to replicate that model with a focus on quality,” he said. “Keeping the fillings and selling the ponies is the most recognizable way to achieve this.”
Sky Lantern isn’t the only member of the Keswicks broodmare band at Rockcliffe Stud who will be visiting Frankel this season; she will be joined by Canton Queen (Ire) (Shamardal), Queen’s Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge) champion niece comes from the deep family of Classical winners Dylan Thomas (Ire), Homecoming Queen (Ire) and the Serpentine (Ire).
