Soccer coach Mario Cristobal offers extension to stay in Oregon, sources confirm
Oregon has offered football coach Mario Cristobal a contract extension in the hope of keeping him at Eugene, sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday.
There are more and more rumors that Cristobal will be the main target Miami if Storm shoots Manny Diaz. Cristobal, a Miami native, has played and coached in Miami. As a player, he won two national championships with the Hurricanes under Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson.
Sources told ESPN that this latest extension is “aggressive” and will be within the scope of several other deals that have occurred during this hiring cycle.
During his fourth season at Oregon, Cristobal has been renewed for two of the past three seasons. Last December, Cristobal received a new six-year, $27.3 million contract that would take him through the end of the 2025 season. If you factor in the incentives, including the Pac championship -12, he could make over $5.5 million this season.
Oregon face Utah on Friday night in the Pac-12 championship game.
Cristobal will owe Oregon a $9 million buyout if he moves to another school by January 14.
The Oregonian first reported that Cristobal had a contract extension offer in front of him.
