Premier League COVID-19 crisis intensifies as Burnley-Watford is eliminated
Premier League’s COVID-19 crisis continues as Burnleymatch with Watford on Wednesday is the latest fixture to be postponed.
Burnley were due to host Watford but confirmed hours before kick-off that the match had been postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Claudio Ranieri’s squad.
The news comes after Tottenham’s clash with Brighton and Manchester Unitedat ‘s game Brentford has been discontinued due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the past few days.
Burnley released a statement that read: “Unfortunately, the Premier League Management has postponed the Burnleys’ home game against Watford, due to tonight’s match. [Wednesday Dec. 15] at 7.30pm GMT.
“The decision was made on the advice of medical advisors due to an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in Watford’s squad. As a result, the club did not have enough first-team players to complete the match. .
“The Premier League understands that this decision will disappoint and disappoint the fans present at tonight’s game and apologizes for the inconvenience and disruption caused in such a short time.
“When considering any application for postponement, the Board considers a range of sporting and medical factors. Each decision is made on a case-by-case basis with everyone’s health being of paramount importance. .”
Earlier on Wednesday, Premier League announces new measures to combat the spread of COVID-19, including the need for fans to present a COVID status statement prior to match day as well as proof of vaccinations or a negative test result. The federation also said masks will be mandatory when moving inside the stadium but will be optional when sitting down during the match.
The statement added: “Due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has re-imposed the Emergency Measures. These measures include procedures such as regular testing. rather, wear a face covering while indoors, observe social distancing, and limit treatment time.”
