Spider-Man: No Way Home has fans in its challenges – and that comes with extra pressure
No Way Home, the third film in Sony and Marvel’s latest Spider-Man franchise, is widely considered the biggest movie of the year, if not unprecedented, with sales far exceeding of Avengers: Endgame from 2019.
It shows Peter Parker (Holland) currently dealing with being viewed by Mysterio as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and the impact it will have on not only him, but his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) , best friends Ned (Jacob Batalon) and Aunt May (Marisa) Tomei).
He asks an Avenger teammate, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), to cast a spell to erase everyone’s understanding of him being considered a hero – only to have it false and open a verse long.
But with the film so much of a mystery and with a slew of rumors running high, Holland told Sky News there’s pressure to get the movie right.
“It was quite stressful,” he said.
“People have been excited about our previous films, but nothing quite like this.
“You know, this is kind of like the Endgame level excitement.
“I think we’ve done an incredible job and I think the fans will be really pleased and fulfilled when they see this movie – but that doesn’t mean it’s any less stressful. a little bit because you know, the expectations are so high.”
What about fan theories about the old Spider-Man actors?
Popular and widespread fan theories predict that former Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will appear in the film – although this has never been confirmed by Sony and Marvel Studios.
The fuel for those theories is in the form of villains from those movies appear in No Way Home.
Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin in Tobey Maguire’s film, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro from Andrew Garfield’s outing all appear in the new film.
Holland, who in the past has perhaps been more attentive than he should about some Marvel movies, said that even though we know retro villains are back, he still has to secret about the movie.
“You still have to be careful,” he told Sky News
“Although there’s pretty much everything out there – we know which villains will return.
“These two trailers are amazing and they’re very good at teasing what’s to come. There’s still a lot I can’t talk about.”
He laughs: “We have to be very careful because someone from Sony is going to fly in here and hit me with a pan or something on the head.”
Meeting old villains on set is ‘tense’
It seems Holland is just as excited as we are to see all the classic villains on set as fans are when they see them in the trailer, explaining to Sky News that the actors and characters This villain was part of his childhood.
“I remember when I saw Jamie [Foxx] For the first time, I thought, ‘isn’t he green?’ he said.
“We had a lot of fun working together, and… there’s a pretty interesting dynamic between Spider-Man and Electro in this movie.
“But then, seeing Alfred Molina in his original outfit and then seeing Willem [Dafoe] in a Goblin costume it’s amazing and it’s pretty scary.
“As a kid, I was at the age where I saw Spider-Man and I thought it was real, so there’s still a little bit of that in me.
“So when I first met them, it was a bit like, ‘Wow, this is really weird, you’re the one who’s tried to kill Spider-Man many times, and now I’m Spider-Man, so you have a are you going to kill me?’
“So it’s fun. It’s fun, scary but cool.”
Spider-Man gave Holland opportunities he never got
As Holland mulled over the next steps in his career, he explained that Spider-Man gave him the opportunity to do some “great things in the past”.
He first appeared as the character in 2016, when he appeared in Captain America: Civil War, and since then there have been three standalone Spidey films, and both Avengers Infinity War and Endgame – a total of six movies in the red suit.
“It means everything,” he said.
“I’ve had the opportunity to meet some incredible people, go to some amazing places and also do some amazing things.
“We’ve founded this trust called the Brothers Trust, which is something I’m incredibly proud of – over the past few years we’ve raised money through a variety of ways and given it to other people. smaller charities, you know, really make an impact and make a difference these days, this is really cool, you know?
“I couldn’t be more grateful for what Spider-Man and what Sony and Marvel have given me.
“It’s a wonderful world and that’s why I said if it’s time to leave, I’ll do so proudly.”
