Temple Owls football coach Rod Carey leaves after playing 12-20 in 3 seasons
Temple Coach Rod Carey will be absent after three seasons, the school announced Monday.
Carey has won 12-20 with the Owls, including 3-9 this season. He scored eight of his 12 wins at Temple in his first season.
Coaching/wide passing coordinator Thad Ward will serve as interim coach.
Temple last month hired a new athletic director at Arthur Johnson, who previously served as senior vice president of athletics at Texas. Carey, 50, came to Temple from Northern Illinois, where he hit 52-30 with two league championships and two divisional titles.
“It is never an easy decision to replace a head coach,” Johnson said in a statement. “The past two seasons have not been easy given the challenges of the pandemic. I want to thank Rod for his dedication to our student-athletes and wish him and his family well. beautiful in their next chapter.”
He was the first Owls coach to be fired since Bobby Wallace in 2005. The next four Temple coaches – Al Golden, Steve Addazio, Matt Rhule and Geoff Collins – all left a chance for Power 5.
