Tesla supposedly started installing Hardware 4 (HW4) technology into the left hand drive Model Y Made in the USA, which is supposed to improve the effectiveness of driver assistance features.
Twitter users Zack posted a series of photos showing many Model Y Performance and Model Y AWD vehicles with updated technology.
The California delivery center that houses these cars also has other new Model Ys that don’t have the technology.
A leaked spec sheet published by Tesla Information confirmed the HW4 was built into one of the vehicles currently being held at the delivery facility in California.
Hardware first launched on Model WILL And Model Xwas discontinued locally.
Tesla is expected to make changes to the hardware with over-the-air updates as it moves closer to the full rollout of its so-called Full Self-Driving technology by the end of 2023.
The Model S and Model X HW4 systems use multiple cameras instead of a combination of camera and radar, and the cameras now provide better quality images with the improved wide-angle lens.
The system also has improved processing power.
At this stage, there’s still no word from Tesla confirming the Model Y has officially received the feature, but it’s not too surprising that the brand hasn’t made any announcements for the Model S and Models either. X.
The vehicles have not been tracked outside Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory with the new technology, so it’s unclear when we’ll see it here in Australia. All Model Ys for the local market are now sourced from China.
Tesla recently made upgrades to the Model Y’s suspension, ahead of a rumored upgrade to the electric crossover.
Tesla says it has improved support stiffness at the top of the Model Y shock absorbers by 50%, while optimizing their compression damping to reduce damping forces in low-speed collisions.
