After skipping the 2021 model year, the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe (the coupe isn’t really a coupe) is back in a redesigned form for 2022, following in the footsteps of its BMW 4-Series brother. (the coupe is actually a coupe), redesigned for 2021.
Have all of that? No? OK — in short, BMW uses the nomenclature “Gran Coupe” to denote the unruly four-door version of its “real” two-door coupe models. In the case of BMW’s compact sedans, that means the 4-Series Gran Coupe is essentially a sleeker, more stylish version of the BMW 3-Series four-door sedan, while the 4-Series (without suffix) is “true” 2-door coupe version. All three models share the same basic platform and use the same turbocharged 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder powertrains. The 3-Series sedan also offers a plug-in-hybrid powertrain that others don’t. The 4-Series and 4-Series Gran Coupe share a boldly styled front end with a controversial large grille “nosed;” The 3-Series is attached to a more conventional version of BMW’s trademark decoupled grille.
After a break for the 2021 model year, the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe has been redesigned for 2022. It’s a compact 4-door hatchback sedan that shares a basic chassis and powertrain with the 3-Series sedan. and 4-Series coupes.
The 4-Series Gran Coupe looks like a sleek, coupe-esque 4-door sedan, but its rear roofline hides the fact that it’s actually a hatchback sedan — and BMW’s execution at this is pretty slick. We might even call it a best of both worlds. In addition to its more extravagant looks, the 4-Series Gran Coupe offers more flexibility in cargo handling than a 3-Series sedan. There’s 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the Gran Coupe’s rear seats – less than 17 cubic feet for the 3-Series sedan – but folding the rear seats down opens up an impressive 45-foot cargo space. 6 cubic feet. We got our first taste of the new 4-Series in the form of an M440i xDrive model with a vibrant (and cost-effective) San Remo Green paint job. The M440i says BMW’s 382-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder, and xDrive says all-wheel drive (all M440i Gran Coupe models come standard with AWD). If you’re looking for something a bit less luxurious and more affordable, you can opt for the RWD-only 430i, a 255-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that still manages to deliver. Our test car was upgraded through a number of options and options packages. The Premium package adds a heated steering wheel, heated front seats and a head-up display. The Professional Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and forward cross-traffic alert. The Park Assist Package adds a useful 360-degree surround-view camera display and an automated parking system (the vehicle drives itself into an open parking spot with no or no driver input).

There’s decent space for front-seat passengers in comfortable, supportive seats, but the rear seats are cramped for adults in terms of both headroom and legroom. Note the need for manual seat adjustment in the driver’s seat, an anomaly on our test vehicle due to COVID-related supply chain issues – power front seats are usually standard.
The High Performance Tire and Cooling Package adds 19-inch wheels on summer performance tires and an adaptive suspension. Ride quality is consistently decent, though we found it comfortable enough for comfortable daily commutes in Comfort mode. Selecting Sport mode enhances the suspension for sharper handling, with the penalty of harsher impacts at impact.
Our test car’s engine notes sounded rough and loud in cold starts and at idling — more than we remember about other BMWs we tested with 3.0 turbos. . However, that sound rises to a muffled, complex growl during rapid acceleration, and it’s pure music to our ears. The engine delivers smooth, supple power pretty much whenever you want it, and the eight-speed automatic transmission is a smooth pleasure that always feels in sync with the engine — we’ve never seen it before. it is in a slow state.

Here’s the Gran Coupe living room trick: a cleverly integrated “hidden” hatchback that offers a huge cargo aperture and a surprisingly spacious load floor when the backs of the rear seats are folded down.
We’re consistently impressed with the real-world fuel economy our recent BMW test cars delivered compared to the horsepower they have on board. Considering that it boasts 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, the M440i’s EPA fuel economy numbers are pretty respectable: 22 mpg city/29 highway/25 combined . Our observed economy numbers are in line with those estimates — we averaged 23.6 mpg in a test that includes mostly city driving and some acceleration tests. eat gasoline.
While the Gran Coupe’s sleek looks don’t impede its cargo volume, you’ll pay the price when it comes to passenger space. Relatively narrow door apertures make getting in/out a bit more difficult for tall people, and low-set seats are a drop-in/climb-out — which can be tedious for those long legs and people who are not ‘ are not as agile as they used to be. Once we were seated, we found the right amount of headroom for our 6’6” frame with the driver’s seat adjustable both down and back. However, like most premium compact sedans — convertible or otherwise — the rear-seat space of the 4-Series Gran Coupe isn’t very good, especially behind a person in the tall front seat. The sloping rear roofline means headroom is tight and legroom quickly becomes scarce when the front seats are adjusted to the rear.
Test drive: 2022 Subaru WRX Premium
BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder provides smooth, confident acceleration in almost any driving situation. M 19-inch dual-spoke 5-spoke alloy wheels are standard; M sport brakes with red brake calipers are an inexpensive option.
Another entry/exit quirk: We found the flat-mounted exterior door handles difficult to grab and operate, and the interior front door handles aren’t ergonomically ideal either. We also found the touch-sensitive doorknob locking buttons to be a bit tricky — they often didn’t work on our first try.
As for the 4-Series’ front-end design, uh, super assertive: Style is a subjective thing and we’ll note that BMW is following a broader industry trend that seems to follow a philosophy of “differentiation.” better than being anonymous.” Looking aside, the M440i Gran Coupe is an impressive sporty luxury sedan that’s a bit more practical than its low-sloping roofline.

Dynamically, the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe is essentially identical to a similarly equipped BMW 3-Series sedan. You’ll pay a substantial premium for the Gran Coupe’s rugged look, but get more flexible cargo handling in the bargain.
