The 10 best games we’ve seen in MIX Next

You want games? Good news. Today, we’re taking a fresh look at countless games through the MIX Next event, combined with the Publisher Spotlight event and in-game Black Voices. Between the three games, we’ve seen somewhere close to 100 – if you haven’t seen the full presentation, check it out, as there’s likely something in there that appeals to all tastes, genres, and tastes. fan base.

For our part, there are ten games that really stand out among the three presentations, and we’ve chosen to highlight them below. If you’re just looking for a quick and quick overview of some of the content that really featured in the last few hours, look no further. Here are ten of our favorite games from MIX Next 2022:

Mansion Cut Paper

One of the games that immediately stood out from this entire rollout was Paper Cut Mansion, a roguelite haunted house. You play as a detective named Toby who explores the house to gather evidence to solve a mystery, fend off enemies in top-down battle with permadeath, and solve logic puzzles as you go. Paper Cut Mansion looks visually stunning, with the entire world – you, your enemies, the house, all the furniture, everything – made of paper, looking like dolls and models very detailed paper. I wanted to play this game just for the sake of aesthetics, and considering it’s out today on Xbox and PC via Steam, Epic, and GOG, it could be the perfect haunted Halloween adventure.

Wavetale

One of my favorite post-apocalyptic game genres is “the world has been destroyed and all that’s left are the islands in the sky”, but I didn’t realize until I watched Wavetale have How many versions of that game actually involve a giant ocean instead of the sky. Windbreaker? Sea of Solitude possible? That could be it.

Either way, the slow motion of the trailer from skating through the waves to the soothing music immediately drew me into this 3D and platformer adventure (its other trailers don’t either. backsliding). I want to be that beautiful long-haired girl, Sigrid, who, armed with a net, must defeat her “evil enemy” to save the inhabitants of her archipelago.

Skating across the ocean aside, I’m also really enjoying the proliferation of games in this showcase in general rediscovering what 3D platforming might look like now that we have technology is better and things don’t have to be like Banjo-Kazooie. Wavetale will launch on December 12th on Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox, and PC via Steam. There’s also a demo on Steam now, if you’d like.

No longer content to ask if we can have dogs, Farewell North instead asks, “Can you play like a dog?” Obviously, you can and do. Specifically, you are a hound traveling with humans through a series of Scottish-inspired islands that have been stripped of their color, which you will restore as you go. It’s full of perspective puzzles and hidden objects, with puzzles you’ll have to solve using your unique canine’s abilities while your human interacts with the world using tools. their own tools, very human-like.

As peaceful as it seems, Farewell North is a story about pain and how people deal with loss. You’ll be restoring people’s memories and returning color to the black and white world, but you’re also seeing it all through a dog’s eyes as it helps someone he loves learn to say goodbye. I’m here for the cute dog, but I anticipate staying for the emotions. Farewell North currently doesn’t have a release date, but a demo is available on Steam now.

Shumi goes home

When I mentioned Wavetale above, I talked about how excited I was to see more games harking back to the classic 3D platforming eras that didn’t necessarily rely on visual structure and levels. of them. Shumi Come Home, on the other hand, absolutely does just that. It’s a cute, nature-filled platformer about a little guy (Shumi, a sentient mushroom) trying to find his way home through a world too big for it. It’s instantly captivating, with a very simple classic that makes me instantly nostalgic for Donkey Kong’s Fungi Forest – but I remember what it looked like, not what it actually looked like. Charming, whimsical, perfect for fall (even though it’s not spring yet).

Specifically, Shumi Come Home is scheduled to release in the spring of 2023 on PC and Switch.

Schim

I actually played a few minutes of Schim already, during a demo at Play Days earlier this year. But every time I see it, I’m drawn in by the wonderfully puzzling concept of playing a funny little shadow frog that can only move in the shadows of objects, jumping from one to another. as it tries to figure out who it is. shadow of. It immediately gives itself a distinctive visual style and creates an unusual perspective on other mundane settings such as street corners or parks.

Schim’s latest trailer announces that it’s “feature complete,” with the team now focusing on designing more levels. One feature this presentation introduced was the ability to change the color scheme of a level, which acts as an accessibility feature for colorblind players as well as a fun way to customize levels as you go. play. You can also view this tool at a website: schim.art

Schim is coming to PlayStation and PC via itch.io and Steam, and you can request access to the demo via Steam right now.

Moonstone Island

Sure, I’m a fan of cute, cozy games, but nothing appealed to me as strongly in the MIX rollout as Moonstone Island. It’s a lovely little life simulation that follows an alchemist who, according to their village tradition, has to be away from home for a year to train their alchemy. While on Moonstone Island, they will tame nature spirits, make friends, explore, and build a home as they restore the island. And es, there’s romance and farming too!

But beyond the cute creatures, Moonstone Island is also a deck-building RPG with turn-based battles that pit your friends’ spirits against your enemies. The battle shown in the trailer is both endearing and Earthbound-y, suggesting that players are fighting using the spirit of a lamp and a cup of coffee on their team.

A lot was packed into the short trailer, and I was curious to see how all of the Moon Island systems ended up coming together and working together to make for a full adventure. It is scheduled to release next year on Switch and PC.

My work is not done yet

CW trailer: Suicide, disturbing images

Hey, uh, what the hell is that??? What did I just watch?

My Work Is Not Yet Done, of all the trailers in this trailer, is the one that tells me the least about what’s actually going on in the game it represents. That’s also what makes me want to learn more. On its Steam page, I discovered that it was a narrative-driven investigative horror game that followed a man named Avery. As the last member of an expedition to a remote wilderness, she tries to trace the source of a strange contagion as the landscape and reality change around her. I’m not sure if there’s any connection to Thomas Ligotti’s collection of short stories of the same name about the corporate workplace, but considering both are horror-related, there could be some cross-cutting.

Again on its Steam page, My Work Is Not Yet Done is about “exploring the infiltration and disappearance of human identity/meaning in the strange wilderness.” I have absolutely no idea what that means! That whole trailer has left you sorely disappointed! I also want to play this game! It will be coming to PC via Steam at an unannounced later date.

Spiderheck

Now for something completely different. Spiderheck is a party game, a physics-based brawl where everyone is a spiderman with a laser sword. That sentence alone, to me, sounds insanely good, and the gameplay seems to understand that. It’s a bit Heave-Ho reminiscent of the way spiders seem to move and twirl around their environment, but instead of outsmarting your friends to the finish line, you’ll hit them with a laser weapon, both close and close. war and guns. It’s the kind of silly party game that seems prone to turning into a lot of booze, good-natured yelling to the right crowd, suitable for playing on the local couch or an online hangout via Discord. Now available on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC via the Epic Games Store and Steam.

Sucker for Love: First Date

This hilarious dating simulation got me the classic anime opening trailer in place, complete with “(Hilarious Old People Noises)”. But the game looks like an explosion after that – it’s a visual novel, to be sure, but in addition to chatting with your Lovecraftian teammates, you also perform dark rituals to summon them right from the start and keep them happy: close the blinds, light the candles, say the right words to bring them out of the darkness and make their old and early whims come true.

For now, there are three tentacle female villains who will be spending time on three chapters, as the game has been out since January, but there will be a sequel on the way called Date to Die For coming, even maybe this year.

One beat Min

Every time I think I’ve seen it all with rhythm games, something pops up and blows me away again. This time, it’s One Beat Min, a beatbox rhythm game in which players battle each other by challenging them to copy their beats. The result is a swift back-and-forth of four-button combos (at least in the trailer we just watched) where one player challenges, the other clones, then challenges back, etc. combines typical game rhythm components like button combinations and, you know, rhythm, with creativity in making something your opponent won’t copy and read your opponent’s own, and react quickly to them. Unfortunately, there aren’t many details about One Beat Min yet, so we don’t know which platforms to expect it or when it might launch. Hopefully we’ll see more soon.
