Toyota given its size GR Yaris hot hatch increases torque in Japan.
An upgrade for the car in Japan, including the new one GR Yaris Software Performance 2.0, frees up 20Nm more from 1.6 liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine.
Maximum torque increased from 370Nm to 390Nm like in GRMNwhile the peak power remains at 200kW. The upgrade cost for existing Yaris GR owners is about $1500 in Japan, but not yet locked in Australia.
Toyota has yet to confirm whether the upgrade improves the standard car’s 5.2-second sprint to 100km/h.
The upgrade also allows owners with a “specially trained GR consultant” to adjust the accelerator, all-wheel drive and steering to match their driving style. A whopping 27 combinations are offered and the service costs the equivalent of around $100.
CarExpert have contacted Toyota Australia to see if the upgrade is available locally.
The status of the Yaris GR for Australian buyers remains unclear. The car went on sale in mid-2021 due to strong demand from local buyers, and Toyota has not provided an update on when it will be available again.
At the time, the company said it hoped to “announce the start of pre-orders for this beloved vehicle soon”.
Although the smallest GR product is facing an uncertain future locally, its larger product GR Corolla brother locked and loaded to Australia.

The GR Corolla is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder – yes, the 1.6 – with 220kW of power and 370Nm of torque. That’s a serious punch from such a small power station.
