Despite its remarkable age, the M113 still has some advantages over Soviet-designed infantry fighting vehicles. The M113 – whose rails and weight is much lower than that of a main battle tank – can help transport and protect forces from small arms fire as well as artillery impact.
The M113 is the first aluminum-clad combat vehicle to enter mass production, it introduces new aluminum armor that makes the vehicle much lighter than its predecessors; it was thick enough to protect crew and passengers from small arms fire but light enough for the vehicle to be airlifted and moderately wading capable.
The US Army stopped buying them in 2006 and the M113 series has long since been replaced as forward fighting vehicles by M2s and M3 Bradleys, but large numbers are still used in support roles such as rescue vehicles. armored personnel carriers, mortar vehicles, engineer vehicles, and a command vehicle.
