US, Allies call for urgent UN meeting on Ukraine today
United Nation:
The United States and its allies including France have requested an urgent meeting late Monday of the United Nations Security Council on Russia’s recognition of breakaway territories in Ukraine, diplomats told AFP. is independent.
The countries behind the request to hold the meeting, based on a letter from Ukraine to the United Nations, also include the UK, Ireland and Albania, the same source said.
The formal scheduling of the meeting is up to the rotating chairman of the Council, currently held by Russia, to set the official schedule.
In the letter, Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN Sergiy Kyslytsya invoked the UN Charter and rules of procedure to ask for his country’s representatives to be present at any emergency meetings.
The letter addressed to Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia and obtained by AFP also asks United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to attend the emergency session, as well as representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said she supported an emergency meeting.
“The Security Council must ask Russia to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, a United Nations Member State,” she said in a statement.
“The Russian statement is nothing more than a theater, seemingly designed to create a pretext for a further invasion of Ukraine.”
