US’ textiles & apparel imports drop 22.6% to $42.4 bn in Jan-May 2023
Between January and May 2023, the majority of US textile and apparel imports, including apparel, were valued at $31.518 billion, down 22.92% from $40,891 billion between January and May. May 2022. Non-apparel imports accounted for $10.929 billion, down 21.69% from $13.956 billion in the same period a year ago, according to the latest Major Shippers Report released by the US Department of Commerce. Both segments experienced declines in domestic shipments.
Among the top ten apparel suppliers to the United States, imports from no country recorded an increase. Imports from China and Cambodia decreased by 30.44% and 34.42%, respectively. Imports from Pakistan decreased by 31.98%, Vietnam 28.07%, Indonesia 27.57%, Honduras 19.02%, Bangladesh 19.16% and India 20.80%.
Between January and May 2023, US textile and apparel imports fell 22.61% to $42.447 billion from $54.847 billion in the same period in 2022. China, accounting for 24.10% market share, remains the largest supplier. Cotton and man-made fiber products dominate imports. This decrease contrasts with the import increase in 2022.
Among the top ten suppliers in the non-apparel category, only imports from Mexico experienced year-over-year growth, up 8.63%. On the other hand, imports from China decreased by 28.32%. Import shipments from other countries, such as Vietnam, Turkiye, Pakistan and Canada also decreased. Imports from South Korea fell by 23.18% and from India by 27.78%.
During the period under review, the total value of US textile and apparel imports was $42.447 billion. Man-made fiber products are worth $21.917 billion, while cotton products are worth $17.751 billion. Wool products valued at $1,285,289 million and silk and vegetable fiber products valued at $1,494,405 million.
In 2022, US textile and apparel imports continued to increase, reaching $132.201 billion, up from $113.938 billion in 2021. This increase follows a sharp decline in 2020 as the country’s imported shipments This decreased to 89.596 billion USD, compared with 111.033 billion USD of imports in 2019.
