Striker Josh Sargent and defender Cameron Carter-Vickers returned to their club’s starting lineup on Saturday, the final weekend of the game before USA coach Gregg Berhalter announced his roster.
A 23-year-old from Colorado, Vines received ankle surgery at AZ Monica Deurne hospital in Antwerp, Belgium, Vines’ club, Royal Antwerp, announced Saturday.
Vines said he broke his tibia and will be sidelined for three to four months.
“Life is full of ups and downs. Unfortunately yesterday I broke my tibia and had to undergo surgery,” he wrote on Instagram.
“It’s disappointing, I missed the World Cup but I will support the boys until the end.”
Vines last played on October 30 against Charleroi. He has nine international appearances and is seen as a possibility for the USA squad as a backup to starting at left-back. Antonee Robinson.
On loan from Milan Barcelona, the 22-year-old has been limited to two starts and six substitute appearances this season. He is the Americans’ first choice at right-back and a backup for Robinson at left-back.
Sargent, a 22-year-old from O’Fallon, Missouri, started for Norwich at Rotherham in the British Second Division Championship after missing a couple of games with a calf injury against Burnley on October 25. Sargent has eight goals for Norwich this season.
Carter-Vickers, the 24-year-old son of former NBA player Howard Carter, started giving Celtic against Dundee United in the Scottish Premier League. He missed a Champions League match at Real Madrid on Wednesday because of pain after playing 90 minutes in last weekend’s game at Livingston, which has artificial turf surfaces.
Berhalter will announce his 26-man roster on Wednesday, ahead of FIFA’s November 14 deadline.
Returning to the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, USA opens against Wales on November 21, turn England in a match on Black Friday four days later and ended the group match on November 29 with Iran.
