Vazquez, Miller Brings Santa Anita Autumn Meet Titles
Jockey Ramon Vazquez, 38, of Puerto Rican descent, finished with 25 wins in an 18-day Santa Anita Autumn meet to claim the equestrian title, ending five wins over runner-up Juan Hernandez. Vazquez, who started riding in California in March after competing at Prairie Meadows and Oaklawn, won his first Santa Anita title on Sunday’s closing day.
Vazquez said: “I am very grateful to be here and the owners and coaches who have supported me. “I’m so lucky, this is huge for me because not everyone who comes to cycle at Santa Anita has made it. [leading jockey] For a short time. I am so lucky and I thank everyone who has supported me. “
Miller, a 56-year-old Angelino native who lives mostly from the San Luis Rey Downs Training Center, won his fourth Fall Meet title and his sixth overall Santa Anita coaching title.
“We’re thrilled to win another title at Santa Anita,” Miller said. “It’s always a great achievement to win there. It was a team effort. The barn guys did a great job all meeting up and really special thanks to my owners for being the best, most loyal group of hosts a guy could ask for. Going forward, we will have a small chain in Oaklawn but our main focus will be in Santa Anita. “
Live racing will return to The Great Race Place with the opening date for the 2022-23 Midwinter Encounter on Monday, December 26.
