W Series adds two more races to Formula One support schedule
The all-female W Series will feature 10 races on this season’s Formula Support schedule, 2 more than originally planned, following Wednesday’s announcement of the opening and closing doubles matches. in Miami in May and Mexico in October.
This year will be the third season of the series, with Britain’s Jamie Chadwick chasing a third crown after winning it in 2019 and 2021. No championship in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The inaugural season featured six races, all in Europe, with eight races last year when the W Series hooked up with Formula One and visited the Americas.
It will race in Asia for the first time as part of the Japanese Grand Prix at the weekend in October.
The W Series will also use vehicles supplied by Toyota Gazoo Racing New Zealand (TGRNZ) in Spain and Japan instead of their own.
Race director Dave Ryan said: “This is a good solution for the W Series as it prevents the use of air transport and allows us to host our support races over eight weekends. Formula Grand Prix in the most sustainable way”.
The W series, which uses identical F3, was launched in 2019 to help women climb the motorsport ladder to Formula 1, which has not had a female driver since the Italian Lella Lombardi in in 1976.
