Weekly Covid cases 6.5% up nationally, 37% in Delhi | India News
Delhi registers 37% increase in Covid case in week ends on Sunday, breaking a three-week slump infectionin an alternating rise and fall pattern that is being seen in several other states in current viral proliferation.
Meanwhile, cases increased nationwide for the ninth consecutive week, with nearly 1.37 lakh infections detected in the country in the past seven days (July 18-24), an increase of 6.5% from the previous week. This is the highest weekly tally since mid-February this year.
The number of covid deaths in India, although continuing to stay relatively low, surpassed 300 for the first time since the first week of March. There were at least 308 fresh deaths in the week, up 22% from 253 the previous week. Neighboring UP and Haryana also recorded gains in their second week of running. Cases rose and fell alternately in the three states over the past 15 weeks. A similar trend is being seen in at least two other states, Rajasthan and Karnataka.
Active virus cases in the country neared the 1.5 lakh mark, the highest since February 23.
While Kerala continues to report the highest number of new cases, more than 16,000 mined in the current week, cases continue to decline in the state. Kerala reported a 19% drop in weekly cases. Cases also fell in Bengal (down 24%), Tamil Nadu (10%) and Bihar (17%). In most other states, infections gradually increased during the week. Maharashtra reported nearly the same number of new cases as last week, 14,870 versus 15,367. Infections continue to rage in the east and northeast in states such as Assam, Odisha, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Sikkim.
