SEPTEMBER (c, 2, Munnings–Hello Maggie May {MSW, $264,687}, by Lemon Drop Kid) O-Dew Sweepers LLC; B-Coteau Grove Farms, LLC (LA); T-George R. Arnold, II
A number one song in America during the long hot summer of 1971 had the first two lines: Wake up, Maggie, I think I’ve got something to tell you / It’s the end of September and I really should back to school.
The song was called “Maggie May” and co-writer Rod Stewart had the mullet-haired, raspy voice that became a world star.
It’s only been fifty years or so, and now the Churchill Downs winning team last September connects to his name with his mother HELLO MAGGIE MAY – for audiences old and new, domestic and international (he could go to Royal Ascot). This connection is confusing and bittersweet, like the end of a summer. The song “Maggie May” is, after all, the story of a difficult and perhaps ill-fated emotional journey between two runaways – one very young, the other not so much.
