Women’s Day Message Criticized in Flipkart Kitchen Appliance Advertisement; Sorry problem
The world celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8, 2022. We’ve seen many brands share special Women’s Day messages as part of their marketing strategy to impress. with female consumers. One such initiative by e-commerce giant Flipkart failed when it was called upon to share messages regarding women with kitchen appliances. On the occasion of Women’s Day, Flipkart sent out a notice saying “Dear Customer, This Women’s Day, let’s congratulate you. Get Kitchen Appliances from Rs.299 [sic]The message was unpopular with people online, who have criticized Flipkart as ‘sexist’.
It all started when a Twitter user took a screenshot of the message and posted it on his controller, writing with it: “Can you spot the problem here?”

Immediately, the post gained attention with those who said Flipkart’s marketing strategy was offensive. “It’s annoying Why are women defined by kitchen appliances… only?? The whole world is ours definitely the kitchen isn’t our whole world!! No thanks! !” wrote one.
Another comment read, “Celebrating Women’s Day by promoting, perpetuating and celebrating gender roles.
Flipkart was quick to take to their social media to share an apology for their mismarketing and write, “We messed up and we’re sorry. We didn’t mean to hurt people’s feelings. anyone’s feelings and apologizes for the earlier shared Women’s Day message.”

That’s not all. Twitter users went on to share many other examples where brands associate women with kitchens and appliances, which perpetuates negative gender stereotypes.
