At 92 years old, AAP’s Punjab Sweep matches a 60-year record

The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday swept Punjab, winning 92 of the 117 seats in the National Assembly, in a record second only to the joint count of the votes by Akali Dal-BJP in 1997. AAP’s scores are in line with cons. number 92 of Akali Dal from that election.
This time, the AAP destroyed the Congress and the combined Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party, sending leaders like Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Parkash Singh Badal and Amarinder Singh home with pink votes.
While AAP won three-quarters of the seats, Congress won 18, SAD 3, BJP 2 and BSP 1. An independent party also won.
AAP will now form the second government in the country after the one led by Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi.
Mr Kejriwal hailed the party’s performance in Punjab as a “revolutionary” while his party leader Raghav Chadha said the AAP would emerge as the replacement of the Congress at the national level in the coming days. .
Political supporters such as Mr Channi, Parkash Singh Badal, Amarinder Singh, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Sukhbir Singh Badal have faced fatigue.
Mr. Channi overcame Labh Singh Ugoke of AAP by 37,558 votes from Bhadaur. He also lost to Chamkaur Sahib, where he was defeated by AAP’s Charanjit Singh by a margin of 7,942 votes.
In the 2017 Punjab assembly election, the National Assembly ended the 10 years of Akali Dal-BJP’s rule by winning 77 seats. The AAP got 20 seats while the Akali Dal-BJP coalition won 18 seats and two went to the Lok Insaaf Party.
The BJP, which was a junior partner during the alliance with the SAD, fought in this election with the Punjab Lok Parliament led by Amarinder Singh and the SAD led by Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa (Sanyukt).
