Aspyr is acquiring Beamdog from developer MythForce
Game publisher Aspyr has announced that it is acquiring development studio Beamdog. The news was revealed in a tweet this morning, a day after the two companies together announced a new game, MythForce.
The tweet read: “We are delighted to welcome the talented team at Beamdog to the Aspyr family!” Other than providing a link to the MythForce website, no other information about the purchase was provided.
In addition to the new IP of MythForce, Beamdog specializes in remakes of classic RPGs related to Dungeons and Dragons. The studio has previously released Enhanced Versions of Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, and Planescape: Torment. Most recently, Beamdog developed an online version of the strategy board game Axis and Allies 1942.
Aspyr is also involved in game remakes and releases. The developer/publisher has brought back Star Wars games from recent bygone eras such as Star Wars: Episode I – Racers, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and the upcoming port of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed on Switch. While most of these games are simple portals, Aspyr is developing a remake from scratch Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republicannounced at The Game Awards last year.
MythForce, the project that brought these studios together before the acquisition, is a four-player first-person fantasy roguelite with art designed to resemble a Saturday morning cartoon. See the trailer for it in our story from its announcement yesterday. Mythforce is an early access exclusive on the Epic Games Store on April 20.
