Attacking JNU: JNU says “No violence will be tolerated” after clash: 10 points
New Delhi:
At least 16 people were injured when a scuffle broke out between two groups of students on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in the national capital on Sunday.
-
The administration of Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) released a statement, calling on students to refrain from participating in incidents that disturb peace and harmony on campus. “The vice-principal communicated that no violence would be tolerated on campus,” the statement said.
-
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has accused a pre-planned conspiracy by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) of being behind the clash between the two groups on the JNU campus yesterday.
-
ABVP’s JNU Wing president, Rohit Yadav, said they have no objection to vegetarian food being served in the dorm’s disarray. People are free to eat whatever they want,” he said.
-
Mr. Yadav alleged that the JNUSU students resisted the behavior of Ram Navami pooja and that they attacked ABVP members with sticks while the ceremony was being performed.
-
Police earlier this morning registered the FIR based on a complaint filed by JNUSU, SFI, DSF and AISA members against unidentified ABVP students.
-
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Manoj C said that ABVP members have informed that they will also file a complaint and that appropriate legal action will be taken upon receipt of the complaint.
-
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association (JNUTA) condemned the violence and asked the vice-chancellor to intervene in the matter.
-
Both sides accused each other of throwing stones and injuring their members. JNUSU alleged that ABVP members prevented students from eating vegetarian food in the disarray of the dormitory and created an atmosphere of violence.
-
Akhtarista Ansari, a JNUSU student who suffered a head injury during the clash, said that ABVP members attacked them with sticks while they were having dinner at Kaveri Hostel. “We have never stopped any Ram Navmi pooja competitions as ABVP claims,” she said.
-
At least sixteen students from both sides were injured when chaos engulfed the campus yesterday evening. JNUSU and ABVP students staged separate rallies inside the university campus, blaming each other for the violence.
