Classic Car Ads: The Luxury Cars of 1985 | Daily Drive | Consumer Guide® The Daily Drive
For the most part, we define luxury vehicles not by price, but by make and model. For example, an Oldsmobile 88 is, for most people, not a luxury car. But an Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight… we can totally agree that high end Olds are a luxury ride.
And speaking of Ninety-Eight, that big Oldsmobile was just under $15,000 in 1985, the model year we’re celebrating here. For the record, the Toyota Cressida was also valued at around $15,000 at the start. The Chrysler products featured on this list are priced slightly lower, but are marketed as luxury vehicles and may have been cross-shopped against products like the Ninety-Eight.
It is worth noting that in 1985, most of the US luxury car fleet was downsized and switched to front-wheel drive. For many shoppers, these cars were compromised compared to their V8-powered, rear-wheel drive predecessors, but you’d never know it when you read the ad copy. displayed below.
If you’ve spent time with any of the cars pictured here, let us know about it. The place to leave comments is at the end of the article.
