Conor Benn under investigation for another failed drug test
Via Barry Holbrook: Besieged Conor Benn is under investigation for a second alleged drug offense earlier this year against clomifene. If Benn is found guilty, he could be banned from the sport for more than four years.
Worryingly, the new claim against Benn from earlier this year was for the same drug clomifene, but nothing happened.
A four-year or longer suspension for Benn (21-0, 14 KOs) would eliminate the possibility of him taking on Chris Eubank Jr, and would see him not return to the ring until after that. he is over 30 years old.
Of course, with Benn’s clever promoter Eddie Hearn, there’s always the possibility that he finds loopholes to bring him back into the ring if he takes him out of the country for Saudi Arabia or another another foreign country willing to ignore his drug ban.
Benn, 26, is currently under investigation for testing positive for clomifene ahead of his previously scheduled fight with Eubank Jr, which is believed to have taken place last weekend. The exact date for Benn’s positive test result is unknown.
What is known is that Benn failed a drug test with VADA and not UKAD. According to Benn’s positive test result, his fight with Eubank Jr was called off. Although Benn’s promoter Hearn insists that the fight has only been postponed, the new claim of a second positive test for clomifene makes that seem unlikely.
“Conor Benn is being investigated over claims he failed OTHER drug tests earlier this year for the same clomifene,” Daily mail. “The 26-year-old could face a long-term ban from the ring because of unsuccessful drug tests.
[Benn’s positive tests] “makes a ban seem inevitable – one that can even be longer than a typical four-year suspension for a single infraction, could keep the 26-year-old out of the ring into his thirties.
“A few of us knew about this experiment a while ago,” said Frank Warren. “That makes it even more of a scandal. More harmful to our sport than people think.”
It’s not clear why UKAD didn’t catch Benn because of the same clomifene that VADA has. Is there a problem with UKAD’s testing process?
“Yes. Earlier this year. Same thing,” A source told Dailymail that Benn tested positive for clomifene earlier this year.
There is still no word as to why Benn’s Model B has yet to be tested. For Model B to be tested, Benn demanded it be checked, according to Dailymail.
The reason why Benn delayed testing his Model B is unknown. Certainly, Benn will want to test his sample B, especially if he believes he is innocent.
