Via Jack Tiernan: Daniel Jacobs says he was shocked by the scorecards for last Saturday night’s three-part match between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
‘The Miracle Man’ Jacobs says he wants to fight Golovkin in a rematch. He thinks it will be an interesting fight for the fans.
Jacobs felt that Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) didn’t deserve more than three rounds because he was too cautious about letting go, and he lost the round and was thus passive against Canelo.
Like so many fans, Jacobs continued to expect a crime boom from 40-year-old Golovkin, but it never happened. He was too cautious, fighting in a way that was above all safety to avoid getting his throat cut by Canelo.
In general, Golovkin fought as a companion, just trying to survive. We witnessed the Golovkin-initiated glove touch with Canelo and the nod.
It looks like Golovkin got there in a 12-round match, and raked in big bucks for his efforts. For the fans at T-Mobile Arena and those who paid $85 or $65 to order the Canelo-Golovkin III battle on DAZN pay-per-view, much of that didn’t happen.
“For me, I’m not disappointed because I know this probably won’t be the best performance from GGG, but at the same time, I’m impressed with Canelo because Canelo is not a fast starter, “Danny Jacobs mentions Boxing DAZN.
“It was shocking; I won’t lie,” Jacobs said of the Canelo vs. Golovkin. “Obviously, in boxing we sometimes get into something controversial, but in a match of this caliber you would think it would be cut clean.
“All of us and the fans, everyone watching saw a clear fight with what we thought was over. So I gave GGG no more than three innings,” Jacobs said.
Shawn Porter said of Golovkin: “I also gave him three. “I Tweeted this. I don’t know how to rate a professional boxing match, but I got it 9-3. We were world champions, and we won 9-3.
“What are you?” [the judges] doing down there that you are seeing something very different from us? We just answered it right there. You’re not a warrior,” Porter said.
“We couldn’t see,” Jacobs said.
“I saw three things happen in this fight,” Porter said. “I saw Canelo start quickly, and GGG hesitated. He can’t find his time. He’s definitely a bit nervous about getting counterattacked and stuff like that. It’s #1.
“#2, this is a high profile fight, so no one wants to take that chance because they know what the consequences are if you take it at the wrong time. That’s number two.
“#3, I see Canelo slow down. I see GGG has had some success just touching him. What does that do, Danny, mentally? ‘I can touch him. Let me do a little more. ‘
“So it wasn’t really GGG that decided to pick it. GGG picked it up, found some success, and Canelo slowed down, and things worked out in the end. I gave GGG three of the last few innings because of that,” said Porter.
Golovkin never really picked up his offensive in the second half. The only reason Golovkin won the round at the end of the match was that Canelo was out of gas and running away from the battlefield.
He did not want to be beaten and did not have the necessary energy to fight Golovkin.
“Having fought both of them myself, I know one thing about Canelo that I coached when he fell into these pitfalls. These lack of time and fight. He started walking in circles.
“He started fast, changed the dynamics of the game, and gave something different for GGG to think about, and brought in a very, very important win for himself after a loss.
“For me, boxers have this and it’s very hard to let it go. Boxers have this that sometimes they need someone to tell them it’s over and give you that extra strength,” Jacobs said when asked where Golovkin is going from here.
“Boxers are fighters by nature, so I understand GGG wants to end his career the way he wants to end his career. So I would suggest he try to fight someone like Danny Jacobs.
“They had a really good comeback game of the day, and I think the fans are going to love that game. Yes sir. Yes, sir,” Jacobs said when asked if he could make 160 and 168.
The problem with Golovkin fighting a rematch with Jacobs (37-4, 30 KOs) is that it wasn’t a sell-in match. Jacobs’ career is on the upswing with a recent defeat to John Ryder last February and disappointing matches against Gabe Rosado and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
If Golovkin is counting on being able to sell his next match on pay-per-view after his poor effort against Canelo, it would be a better opponent than the 35-year-old Jacobs. At the very least, Golovkin will need one of these boxers to sell a pay-per-view fight:
- Jermall Charlo
- David Benavidez
- Caleb . Factory
- Chris Eubank Jr
Jacobs is no longer relevant after his loss to Canelo, and his recent battles against Ryder and Chavez Jr.
“I’m not mad at it because we saw a level that you most recently in your most recent game, and saw. We saw what level GGG performed tonight,” Shawn Porter said.
“You both have a way of measuring each other and figuring out what you can do to beat each other. You come into the ring a little bit more confident than GGG did tonight.
“I’m sure you’ll have the opportunity to understand that now you have the opportunity to retire this man named GGG,” Porter said.
A fight between Golovkin and Jacobs has no chance of happening because this contest has no demand. In hindsight, Jacobs made the mistake of playing against Chavez Jr. Ryder and Rosado.
He should have fought Callum Smith because that would have given him a chance to prove himself against a super mid-higher at the time.
