In this continuing series, we’ll be taking a look at US-bred and/or conceived athletes taking part this upcoming weekend at the Japan Racing Association tracks, focusing on pedigree and/or performance within sales. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend’s run at Nakayama and Hanshin Racecourse. Then hosted the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity show on Sunday, which featured the offspring of North American celebrities like Canada’s Horse of the Year, Lexie Lou, Land Over Sea, Dust and Diamonds and My Jen:

Approach, sell by pony to Frankel (GB) for $675K at Keeneland in November 2013, privately acquired and raising a Kentucky hybrid son of Tapit in 2018 before she (and her pony) exported to Japan. AIR ANEMOI (c, 2, Point of Enty – Nokaze, by Empire Maker) aspires to be the fourth winner among many Japanese athletes for his dam, who beat millionaire GSW Air Almas (Mighty Warrior); Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}), four-time winner of nearly $580,000; and this pony’s full brother is Air Sage, winner of three of his first four trips to the post, who posted a reliably average finish when last seen in 3000 meter track G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) in late October. Nokaze is half sister to SW Yuzuru (Medaglia d’Oro), whose daughter Yuugiri (Shackleford) finished second in the Rags after Riches S. and GII Golden Rod S. last month. MOZU PHOENIX (f, 2, Union Rags–Storm Showers, by Storm Cat), a $200k acquisition of KEESEP, is the maternal niece of GSW Welcome Surprise (Seeking the Gold), whose daughter is Guest House (Ghostzapper) is responsible for the GSW Guest Suite (Quality Sugar). The third dam of the March mare is the impeccable Weekend Surprise (Secretariat), who made AP Indy, Summer Squall, Eavesdroppers and the awesome Honor Ratings.
