Via Sean Jones: Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn says he wants to consider doing a fight between Jaime Munguia and Dmitry Bivol this year.
Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez told ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez this week that he wants to take on his famous undefeated middleweight opponent Munguia (41-0.33 KOs) with WBA lightweight champion Bivol (21-0, 11 KOs).
Hearn admitted that it was “strange” how Munguia’s promoters played him because he thought he would be better off against Canelo Alvarez or Gennadiy Golovkin, because it would be competitive matches. But against Bivol, Hearn says Munguia won’t win a round as he will be overwhelmed.
Golden Boy may have had no luck in getting Canelo & Golovkin to agree to fight Munguia voluntarily. Golovkin is now 40 years old and he will most likely lose to Munguia.
Munguia says he wants to play Golovkin, Jermall Charlo, Bivol & Canelo in 2023. All those will be excellent matches this year, but we’ll have to see if Golden Boy can pull off any any of those matches or not.
Gomez says Munguia could go up to 175 or fight in the weight class to catch up with Bivol. Munguia is huge for a middleweight, and some would say it’s a natural 168-pound person. But given Munguia’s physique, he could easily fight at 175 and look like a genuine lightweight boxer.
“Yes, I’m happy to see that fight,” said Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn iFL TV about the fight between Jaime Munguia and Dmitry Bivol.
“Munguia, it’s strange what they did to him. I like him; I think he’s very interesting. For me Munguia vs Canelo, Munguia vs Golovkin, but Munguia vs Bivol, he won’t have a chance to win a round against Dmitry Bivol.
“If you have never shown an intention to participate in any dangerous battles before, why did you choose Dmitry Bivol? Listen, why not?Hearn said.
Munguia would be a great choice for Bivol to fight in April as a warm-up to get him ready to fight Canelo in September. To be fair, a lot of American boxing fans will be excited to see that. watch Bivol vs Munguia in the first quarter of this year.
It is questionable how much effort Hearn will put into staging a fight between Bivol and Munguia this year. Hearn wants to set up a fight between Bivol and his Matchroom fighter Joshua Buatsi in April, followed by Canelo in September.
