Dooley Named Track Announcer at Horseshoe Indianapolis
John G. Dooley, a fixture in the announcer box at many Midwest races, has been selected to replace Bill Downes as race voiceover at the Indianapolis Horseshoe Racecourse, Indiana Grand Racecourse. before. Eric Halstrom, the track’s vice president and general manager, revealed the news in a tweet Friday afternoon.
A native of Staten Island, New York, Dooley graduated from St. John’s on Long Island and was an intern at Meadowlands and at the New York Racing Association before taking his first job as a broadcaster at Thistledown in 1991. After 5 years working at the Oval in the area Cleveland and after winter calling met at the Aqueduct in 1996 and 1997, Dooley moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area and was on the mic at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie from 1997-1999.
He had a big break in 2000 when he was given a nod to take over the announcement duty at Arlington Park when the track reopened after two years of closure. Dooley closed the curtain for the race at Arlington this past September.
In 2004, Dooley added Fair Grounds to his portfolio and since then races in New Orleans. The 2022 Horseshoe Indianapolis racing season, featuring the GII Indiana Derby in July, begins April 19.
