Families may have to buy a new car, but their children are safe
Amber Beavens, mother/baby department secretary at IU Health Arnett Hospital, said: “I am delighted to hear that the baby is safe.
Beavens says about why she volunteered to be a car seat safety technician: “When my kids were young, we didn’t think much about car seat safety. “Through my 15 years working here, I have learned the importance of car seat safety. Then I became a grandmother almost two years ago and it became a passion.”
Six weeks ago, Beavens installed a car seat for a family as they prepared to bring home their newborn from Arnett Hospital. She provides additional education in car seat safety and proper installation techniques. Last week, that family had a bone cut near the back door where the baby sat. The baby was unharmed as the car seat was installed properly.
Mother/Baby manager Selina McNulty said: “The family may have to buy a new car, but their family is intact. “What we do every day makes a difference for that family. It’s a good reminder of why we do what we do.”
Arnett’s car seat program hits a major milestone
IU Health Arnett has the most successful car seat program in the state of Indiana. On May 31, IU Health Arnett Fixed Fitment Station completed its 15,000th car seat inspection since opening on May 1, 2009.
After the car accident, the family was treated in the Emergency Department of Arnett Hospital. According to the procedure, the Emergency Department contacted a car seat safety technician to request a replacement car seat so that the infant could be brought home safely after discharge from the hospital. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car seats should be replaced after a moderate or severe crash.
“Sometimes it’s great to hear about the difference you make,” says Beavens. “I’m just doing my job. I can only imagine the consequences if the car seat is not installed properly.”
Make sure your car seat is installed properly
According to Safe Kids Worldwide, more than half of car seats are not used or installed properly. Make sure your child’s car seat is installed correctly. Schedule a car seat appointment with the IU Health Arnett Hospital Fixed Mount. A Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) will inspect the car seat installation for free.
Parents and carers can call IU Health Arnett’s Reproductive Education department at 765.838.4670 to make an appointment.
