Succession and West Side Story are among the big nominees for next year’s Golden Globes after 12 months of controversy for the organizers.
Last year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which ran the ceremony, has faced considerable criticism after it was None of its members are black.
There have also been questions around alleged discriminatory practices, including the apparent acceptance of inappropriate “free gifts” following a Los Angeles Times investigation.
It leads to Tom Cruise handing back its award, NBC withdrew such as the award’s broadcaster and Netflix, Amazon and Warner Media (which owns HBO and Warner Bros.) have all said they will not work with HFPA until more meaningful reforms are made.
Sky News understands that Netflix doesn’t believe the HFPA has gone far enough in its reforms, and it hasn’t imported any of its content for submissions, despite its numerous nominations.
A source added that the company believes it is up to the candidates to celebrate nominations from the association.
Despite the backlash this year, the HFPA, which announced it was overhauling its membership, has taken the lead with Golden Globe nominations, agreeing with the likes of Succession, Squid Game and Pose .
“There are now more people of color involved in decision-making across the organization,” says HFPA, and nearly half of its members are women.
It has also introduced a ban on giving gifts from studios to its members, in an attempt to prevent them from appearing to be trying to influence the board.
It is unclear whether the studios will accept the nomination from the HFPA amid the criticism or denial of recognition.
Power Of The Dog, West Side Story and Swan Song all took the lead in the film groups, while Ted Lasso, Succession and Pose got nods in the drama category.
Denzel Washington, Benedict Cumberbatch and Will Smith are among those vying for best actor in a TV series.
And Andrew Garfield and Anthony Ramos are both recognized as actors in musicals or comedies for their roles in the film Lin Manuel-Miranda, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Peter Dinklage.
Belfast, Coda, Dune, King Richard and Power Of The Dog will vie for Best Picture.
The Morning Show, WandaVision, Pose, Squid Game and Mare Of Easttown also received several nominations in the major television categories.
The Golden Globes ceremony will take place on January 9th – but there are no details yet on which carriers will be broadcasting it or who will host it.
