How many public EV chargers are there in Australia?
Electric vehicle owners in Australia have access to nearly 2,400 public charging locations.
A new report from the Australian Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) reveals the number of public charging stations Down Under has skyrocketed from 1614 to 2392 in 2022.
The number of individual plugs offered on those stations increased from 3413 to 4943.
However, a small fraction of those stations have the most convenient DC superfast devices capable of charging at 100kW or more. There are only 99 super-fast stations in Australia, with 365 stations capable of charging from 24 to 99 kW.
The remaining 1928 is limited to 24kW or less.
New South Wales is the state with the most chargers, with a total of 715 (37 over 100kW, 112 between 24 and 99kW and 566 under 24kW) of public EV locations.

The EVC report is calling for a focus on rolling out the fastest EV chargers “in areas of the region with reasonable distances, so that drivers can recharge on long journeys and stay at home.” urban areas to cater to motorists who cannot collect tolls at home”.
Public charging in Australia is operated by a number of companies, including specialized providers such as Report Fee And evieand new players like fuel retailers ampol And BP. Even Tesla now provide charging for all EV owners… in several locations.
Most have plans to expand as electric vehicle sales pick up in Australia. Along with fuel stations, public EV chargers coming soon burger restaurantbottle shop, mall and even old style electric poles.
The demand for these charging stations will only increase until 2023.
Electric vehicles accounted for nearly 6.0% of all new cars delivered in January 2023, and the Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling passenger car for the month.
A wide range of new models are set to hit the domestic market this year, ranging from affordable Chinese cars like GWM Ora Good Cat to high end German metal.
