I think there are a few skills every grown-up should have before leaving the house, and how to hem your jeans should definitely be one of them!
Unless you’re relatively tall, chances are you’ve come across at least one pair of pants that are way too long for you.
So here’s an easy way to hem your jeans to any length you want in just four steps! It’s basically marking, cutting, folding and sewing — you can do it!
Besides some of the uncut or no-cut jean options I mentioned below, this is the easiest way to hem your jeans.
Q: I’m unlucky. Is there a way to do the unlucky option?
If you want to make it even easier (and optionally no-sew), then you can cut the pants 3/4 below where you want the hem, fold under 3/4 of the fabric and iron this tape into the folds to keep the folds. You won’t get a complete hem like in the sewing option, but it will get the job done.
Q: I don’t have a sewing machine. Can I hem jeans by hand?
Yes! Obviously it’s always faster to use a sewing machine, but you can mark, cut, and fold jeans, then use a needle and thread to sew a simple running stitch rather than using machines.
Q: Can I cut my jeans short without heming them?
Yes! Thankfully, the “rough hem” style is popular, which means you can simply cut the jeans to the length you want and leave the edges slightly fringed (you can cut the cord after washing). or leave them if you like that look).
You can also do a “stepped border” look in just minutes without sewing is another option.

–fabric scissors or one rotary cutters, rulers and cutting mats

1. Mark your jeans: Try on your jeans first and use a straight pin to fold the bottom hem and secure it at the length you want the new hem to be (make sure your pants are pre-washed if they’re new jeans so everything is fine). shrinkage will occur before the hem is sewn).
Use a ruler to make sure that the crease line on both legs is even. Turn the pants inside out.
2. Cut your jeans: Use fabric markers and fabric scissors or rotary cutter to mark and cut the leg 1” below your folded hem.

3. Fold your jeans: Fold your cut hem under 1/2” and then another 1/2” and pin in place all the way around the leg.
4. Sew your jeans: Use your sewing machine to sew all the way around the eyelet, removing the pins as you sew, stitching 1/4″ from the top edge of your folded hem.
Trim excess threads when you’re done sewing and use an iron to flatten the hem. Your new pair of jeans is ready to wear!
