In Goa, Trinamool is attached to the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak . party
New Delhi:
Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool congress finally found its regional partner to top the Goa election. The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) of Sudhin Dhavalikar today announced the end of the Trinamool Congress.
In 2017, when Congress became the sole largest party by winning 17 seats in the 40-member chamber, the BJP joined forces with smaller parties such as the MGP and independents to form a government.
Sudhin Dhavlikar, a minister in the BJP government led by Manohar Parrikar in Goa, was dismissed in March 2019 after Mr Parrikar died and Pramod Sawant came to power.
Two of his MLAs have joined the BJP, leaving the group with one MLA left.
Veteran Goa politician and Rajya Sabha MP Luizinho Faleiro, who recently left the Congress and joined the Trinamool Congress, was present when the new relationship was announced.
Elections for Goa’s 40-seat council will take place in February.
Trinamool has been looking for a local ally as they plan to launch in next year’s Goa elections.
Both Trinamool and the Congress have negotiated with former BJP allies the MGP and Goa Forward Party (which broke up with the BJP earlier this year).
Trinamool’s previous plan to merge the Goa Forward Party (GFP) led by Vijai Sardesai with it failed. Congress and Mr. Sardesai announced their binding relationship last week.
Mahua Moitra of the Trinamool Congress, the party’s Goa curator, mocked the coalition on Twitter.
“The INC (Parliament) won 17 seats in Goa 2017, BJP won only 13. However, while AICC’s Digvijay Singh “observes”, the BJP signed an agreement with GFP to form an evil government. GFP suddenly in the previous poll realized BJP is evil, hug INC! Come on Goa- you are better than this!” – Mahua Moitra wrote.
