Jermall Charlo wants to be undisputed at 160
Via Dan Ambrose: Jermall Charlo says he feels “despised” at the age of 160 and that he wants to follow in his twin brother’s footsteps by becoming undisputed at middleweight.
‘Big Charlo’, as some boxing fans refer to Jermall, didn’t actively take on WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade when given the opportunity to fight him.
It’s no secret that Jermell Charlo’s career has outperformed Jermall’s, and the reason for that is his willingness to take significantly more risks. It’s not that Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs) lacks his brother’s talent.
At 32, Jermall may not have had enough time to be the undisputed champion at 160, and it’s not worth it. IBF/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is likely to retire after he pits Canelo Alvarez in their trio on September 17 unless he beats him.
“I’m being ignored right now in the department. That’s not me, guys. I’m the 160-pound department,” Jermall Charlo told Brian Custer Podcasts. “I am a 160 lb champion.
Golovkin won’t waste his time fighting a guy who doesn’t have as many fans as Jermall and competing on a different network than him on Showtime.
“Where are all the other belts? I want all belts in the same department as my brother [Jermell Charlo]. I want to be able to unify and be one of the best middleweight contenders in history,” said Jermall.
Suppose Jermall had the same ambitions as his twin brother Jermell. In that case, he would drop out of 160 lb for a move to 160, where he can pressure undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo to take on him.
For Jermall to put pressure on Canelo, he has to beat a top name like David Benavidez or David Morrell Jr.
Unfortunately, the only person Jermall wants to fight if he moves to 168 is Canelo, and that’s not going to happen because the Mexico star is telling him to earn the match by facing Benavidez, which he I have no interest in doing.
Jermall hopes a fight with Canelo will fall in his lap, brought on by gravity.
In other words, Jermall doesn’t want to go above and beyond and earn a match against Canelo by beating Benavidez or Morrell Jr.
He wants the fight to be passively awarded to him based on his victory over a little-known opponent at 160. A great example of Jermall fighting against puzzling opponents is this. his recently scheduled fight against Maciej Sulecki.
If Jermall wants to contest Canelo or become undisputed at 160, what will he do to battle the likes of Sulecki, Juan Macias Montiel and Dennis Hogan?
It’s clear that Jermall is wasting his time, fighting once a year against a weak opponent, and he has NEVER been the undisputed 160 champion at this rate.
